Sourcing Hand Reamers

Maybe a function of my own jobs but 99.99% of all my reamed holes are a second op to the primary drilled hole so the setup remains the same - reamer held in same chuck or collet as drill. Maybe I'm wrong but think they are kind of like taps where the more you can control any axial deviation, the better the result will be. I know there are applications where a hand reamer is for sure required like say a machinery part you aren't going to remove just to re-align to a quill. What I have found is they cut differently depending on speed & feed & DOC & lubrication & chip loading, so a few variables to mess with even when the alignment is so called perfect. I did try 'hand' reaming an already reamed hole with same tool to clean up some secondary burrs & even that took a bit of feel. Anyways best of luck, tell us how you make out. I've been wanting to try spirals for other applications too. Some feel they cut better in the troublemaker brass & bronze but I haven't justified the cost to experiment yet.

As far as I can tell hand reamers can be chucked as well.

I usually get them used for at most $2 a pop online. With recent inflation maybe $3. I sold few dozen recently to a member for like $100 or something.

Reamers are not that expensive - I mean they are similar to a drill bit, made from HSS.

In metric sizes you can get them off aliexpress brand new for cheap. It costs 32 with shipping for a set of 10. Like I said, reamers are cheap. Even new ones can be had for $3 a pop.

Imperial ones will take a bit to find through. For new ones you may have to pay double metric price.

Who on here has and uses adjustable reamers? How well do they work?

Thanks
I have some Asian made small adjustable reamers and they are horrible! However I can make them work and just ordered one more larger one to have on hand. The ones I have really are only good for aluminum (or cheese maybe).
I have used good quality large adjustable reamers for doing steering kingpin and tie rod holes etc, and they work well but are not fast and take some grunt to operate.

These are on Amazon

It’s a crap shoot even the above Grizzly add says Over/under! Lol

I think what they mean is the set consists of either 1/8 + 0.001 or 1/8- 0.001 no actual 1/8.

I have some Chinese reamers and they are good.

I never used adjustable one as they do look a bit flimsy, are "delicate" even when top of the line company makes them and it is not easy to make these the size you want. I already have hard time measuring non adjustable reamers well.

I was just kidding about the over/under. They may not be top quality but will do for a while you can always replace them as you go with your favourite sizes the rest is on standby.

I have a set of “over” / “on size” / “under” reamers. They are very handy. If you need a press fit, ream 1 thou “under” and press in the pin. If you need sliding, use the “over” reamer and you are done. Use the “on size“ reamer for pins that are under sized (for sliding) or if pin is on size, for a light press fit.

I also have some adjustable reamers - I use them mainly to clean up bores. They work well for that. No too much to actually ream a hole to a specific size.

Reamers have a very big advantage over a boring bar in that no matter how deep the bore, they will make it cylindrical all the way down. Unlike a boring bar where the bore may end up tapered because of tool deflection.

I bought a set of adjustable readers from kbc and I rate them as garbage. I destroyed one in my first outing. I’m done with adjustable

Note : damage was 99% operator fault

Well.... I'm pleased, confused, and disappointed all at the same time.

Pleased - My reamer order was delivered yesterday.

Confused - I got notice from DHL that they had me parcel yet it was delivered by Purolator?

Disappointed - KTS didn't ship my 1/4" reamer. The packing slip indicates Back Ordered. I was told the 3/8" was the back ordered item (4-5 months). So I'll have to contact them now and find out what the wait time will be.

I have adjustable reamers, US made in 1960's. They are as indicated above slow to use. As with all reamers, never turn then in reverse while in the hole.

On Amazon, I only ever look at Amazon.ca to avoid shipping outrage. E.g. Accusize are a Canadian company, east end of Toronto. Often ordering direct from their online store is less than Amazon as well. Ditto with Grizzly.

Well.... I don't think I'll order from KTS again. Ended up the 1/4 spiral reamer was another 4-5 months back order item so we switched it to to a straight flute reamer and they mailed that to me. I just got it in the mail today.

I am also looking for reamers, but have been scared away by the bad reviews the Chinese brands seem to have.

Have you had reasonable success with a particular seller/brand? This information would be much appreciated.
