BaitMaster’s (Work) Bench

First of all, i like to sweep up my swarf ok, and I just swept up a day ago.

For the floor space thing, second of all, you guys already convinced me to buy a lathe and a mill, but If you guys did your jobs and found me a knee mill, a cnc plasma and a cnc mill and a nicer lathe I would run out of room FAST.

Well, now that we know we have an open cheque book to play with....... ;) :p

Well the grinders run. And all I have left is the tables. It was a great build.

There is big news coming to the shop here tomorrow, if all goes according to plan.

It rhymes with new (to me) lathe.

I’m pretty excited,

The old utilathe did me well and got me into machining, and is a great machine, but for what I want to do with my lathe, it’s not the right lathe for me. Hopefully the new one is.

I will post pics of the new lathe when I get it…..

The utilathe will be leaving, and there may already be a buyer, but that is yet to be seen…..

Stay tuned.

Thought I would give an update on my situation.

Really appreciate this forum, it gave me the encouragement to get started with machining and to rebuild my mill.

The mill is done! And running. I had to make a few more parts for it along the way on my lathe, but it got done.

I’m working on a few different things and trying to accomplish some dual Mill/lathe tasks.

I’ve made numerous successful repairs on stuff around the house/garage, none of which I would have been able to accomplish without my mill or lathe.

One of the projects that I took pictures of was this stud/clamp peice for my favourite sliding t square that has been broken for many years. Could I have bought a new one cheaper then my 2 hours working on it? Yes. Could I have learned as much or been as proud at the end result? No way! Here’s the two studs and the square.

Thanks for everything fellas.
Very nice setup. I used an SM lathe when I was a student at SAIT. A metric version. 11 inch if I recall. I really liked it.

Congrats on the new lathe incoming.

Grinder looks great! well done. I'm probably still a few weeks away from making dust with mine, but have been making some progress.

It’s a nice lathe. It’s not however suited really to what I do on a couple fronts. But for someone, it will be an awesome machine.

Cool photo @BaitMaster..... Not sure what the message is supposed to be though. Chilli doesn't usually become explosive during the cooking process. That happens a few hours after its consumed. Nice background machinery too......

FYI guys, I’m kinda surprised none of you called him and asked WHY he originally wanted 14 grande for the lathe.

This is how it was tooled.

There’s also a 15 x 30” cast iron surface plate under the wooden cover with all the mitutoyo metrology stuff and the box of spare carbide inserts. The wood right beside the mitutoyo height guage.

Well cuz $14000 was WAY out of my ballpark no matter how good of a deal I may have gotten.

But wow! Congrats! Awesome stuff man! Way to go!

Well guys, she’s home and safe.

And in the same condition she left her old home in.

She’s not permanently fixtured, I plan to make a proper stand, but a midnight, that bench will do just fine.

I guess here’s some obligatory ways close to the chuck shots, so you guys can see the condition…..

I think from my evaluations this is a practically new machine. Maybe 95%.

She has some cosmetic paint dings, but it all mechanically is tight.

I hope to get many years of service out of this machine. Many long tubular things will be worked on.
