Which Linux? Be Kind…

I don't want to highjack the thread, but stick em up!.:D On my Tormach computer running pathpilot, I cannot find the wireless adapter that came with it when I bought it. I guess they are something special from tormach at $40 + shipping, but is there cheaper alternatives that would work with (mint? I guess is what's running on it?). I'm not too smrt when it come to linux. I suffered through a college course on UNIX back in the day because we HAD to learn it, because no quality CAD software would EVER run on windows....apparently...But I have forgotten everything I learned about that stuff, and more :D.
I'm using https://www.tp-link.com/ca/home-networking/adapter/tl-wn725n/ on my PathPilot controller.
Which adapter came with your computer? Was it from Tormach?

ADMIN NETTOOL and ADMIN NETWORK give you a view of your network config etc.

Thanks Gerrit. Yes it was the one from Tormach. I remember taking it out for some reason shortly after I got it a few years ago and seem to have misplaced it. Checked all over the house and garage, and it's nowhere to be found. It's reassuring you're also using the same one I just ordered.

I'm in a catch-22 situation for WiFi to my LinuxCNC system. I plugged in a WiFi USB module. Attached to the network. Checked the router and it has 192.168.0.27. Named LinuxCNC-G3616.
But I think it needs to run samba to be visible. I am able to get onto the internet although it's pretty slow.

let me know if I can help.

Samba yes, if you want to file share. Depending on the linux version there is a gui to configure it. Else you are stuck figuring out where they put the config files for your flavour.

I built up a LinuxCNC system a while ago & it worked but ultimately went with an Arduino GRBL based controller. I used Debian. One point I didn't see mentioned in this thread was running a latency test. A decent latency score impacts your maximum step rate. I went through a few PC's before finding one with a decent motherboard providing good latency test results. See: http://wiki.linuxcnc.org/cgi-bin/wiki.pl?Latency-Test
I eventually found one and it all worked ok but I never used it. Note that a decent latency score is not necessarily a simple function of the CPU clock speed and depends on a variety of factors. It was interesting to see such varied results from some I evaluated. It really can vary. Seems to me there is a calculation to figure out your maximum step rate based on the latency score. I suppose as long as you allow for this and compensate, less desirable PC's can be pressed to work. At the time, I opted for the best performer I could assemble and have a decent step rate. Now it's a doorstop! :)
