Sourcing Metal | General Discussion

I seen this place advertised on Facebook Market place. Looks like they are in Calgary.

Posted here for reference. I have not tried them.

They are good, structural steel mostly. They don’t have alloy steels and say there is no market for it. They do have quite a bit of aluminum. I have purchased 1” and 1 1/4” rectangular steel solid bar from them, and recommend them.

I have bought steel by the pound from General Scrap. They are owned by Price Steel, a good place to buy large quantities.
I have found that for oddball steel like T1 that C.W. Carry will cut to size. I seldom darken the door of Metal Supermart but I priced a 53"x4"x1/4" piece of T1 at Metal Supermart quoted $535, Then I bought it at CW Carry for $146
Try Encore Metals, merged with Team Tube for heavy wall tube and heat treated chrome moly rod stuff
These are my go to places

operated by a guy and his son. they are good guys. Some things seem expensive, but they are usually less than the usual suspects.

I've been trying ro find some fairly thick stainless steel flat bar and plate. I plan on putting together a stanless steel multi tool. Most tools would be made from some 1/16 - 1/8 inch tool steel or high alloy stainless steels depending on the tool. Those are sold where I buy my knife steels, but not everything needs to be higher quality ss. The frame and the pliers could just be made of 304 ss, but they also need to be thicker. The pliers would require 3/8" ss.
Most places that sell stainless steel sell it as thin sheet metal, tubes, and rods. It's hard to find a supplier for thick ss.

How big of a piece are you looking for? Take a look at this thread, post #5....

4"X1", what I believe is 2302 Stainless.

You probably wont like the shipping component price but at least with OLM you have many options & can get exactly what you want. I have often found on the raw material cost alone they can be be 1/2 the price of my local seller but it varies by alloy. They ship UPS which normally sets my hair on fire but OLM applies some kind of all-in cost & discount to Canada. You can populate the cart to see what you are looking at & just cancel if you don't like it. I have never had a problem & never had a boomerang UPS ransom bill in the mail. Package just shows up on my door within week of order. So I save up my wish list items & try to economize on shipping. To put a number to it, maybe 40 USD shipping on 200 USD order, that was over a year ago now. Shipping cost of metal in particular is the killer no matter where you go. And of course driving your vehicle costs money too.

The other potential option is Ali. Sometimes you can find exactly what you need in small qtys & the subsidize shipping

Alta tube can also be decent for heavy wall tube, CPO and induction hardened rods, and i think I’ve also seen some brass, bronze and maybe aluminum there.

There’s a few places I’ve found. Let me check in the morning.

I found Fazstore.ca out in Quebec. I'm pricing pieces at ~30% of Grainger and I'm ordering enough that even with shipping by Canada Post the final comes out cheaper...

I also found spool3d.ca but the extrusions are of unknown quality and no specs other than listing material as 6063-T5. Probably just fine if someone needs smaller profiles for DIY CNC / 3D Printing rigs.

Fazstore is the one I was thinking of.
I have ordered 2020 and 2040 from Spool3D and their extrusions are good quality.

I was looking at PA as well but they were slightly cheaper than Grainger and would probably have gone that route given the shipping savings. PA stock is also odd: only having 1.5x1.5 lite in black and 1.5x3.5 lite in silver.

Spool3D stuff is also metric so getting anything from them is a commitment to metric going forward. Their 4040 and 4080 is on par with Grainger but shipping is free over $150...

Leaning towards Faztek but shipping may be the tiebreaker.

Timely post, as I was wondering this the other day too. The couple pieces I have here are too small for what I wanted them for, but It wasn't that important of a job to rush out and buy some. I'll stay tuned for the finale, keep us posted.

Be cautious about the extrusion from PA. It's called "80/20 15S 1-1/2 x 3" so it's hard to tell if it's imperial or metric.
8020 is 80mm x 20mm
In the US they have 1530 or 1.5" x 3"
The difference is that the slot widths won't match up.
From Reddit: "The actual grooves are still 8mm. All your t nuts will interchange. Your corner brackets will interchange. They will bolt to each other just fine. The exception is if you're using 8040 and 1530 and you need two grooves to line up on both."
