Gerstner Tool Chests

Give it time, it’ll sink in.
I should have figured it out, but did not, despite my wife telling me about a video of someone complaining that a dozen eggs costs over 12 bucks.

To me eggs are one of the best and least expensive proteins you can buy.

Some say disease is a reason not to permit backyard chickens, but in fact backyard chickens can provide food security since it is low density and much lower risk of contracting bird flu if you protect your birds.

This was a consideration when I decided to get chickens. I wanted to limit any interaction with wild birds and secure a reasonably reliable food source. It also provides a fair amount of fertilizer once it's been composted for the garden. Kind of a win/win situation.

you have chickens, that merits a "You suck"

I'm all set, so within a day of getting a property I'll have this built

I wound up seperating that area below the hen house from the rest of the run. It's a great recovery space if one gets injured, or if you are going to introduce young birds to the flock they can be separated yet close for a while. They're mean buggers towards any newcomers.

Not only newcomers....have you ever witnessed when they get cannibalistic? A good reminder how cruel and savage nature can be.

yes, they're descended from dinosaurs after all. This is why you need to match your flock to the size of the coop. They're almost as bad as me in a crowd

Yup. The seperate part has a permanent resident, as they have continually attacked her each time she's healed up and I try releasing her back..... I can't believe that she survived that first attack.......

My wife keeps thinking we should have chickens and I keep resisting for many many reasons. Once in a while I get silly and also start thinking "oh only dozen or so would be ok". Thank goodness I've always returned to my senses before it could actually happen.

The word i get is you need minimum of 20 birds to make it worth while. Not going to happen in my yard though.

One of my friends north of Toronto has 6 chickens, she feeds them omega 3 enriched layer feed in the morning, and a few table scraps during the day and lets them free range a bit to keep down ticks and other nasty bugs. Her feed bill is under $40 a month, they average 80-100 eggs a month. Feed cost per egg is between 40 and 60 cents per omega 3 rich eggs. That's less than store bought eggs. She values them as pets, and really benefits from fewer ticks in her yard where she spends hours a day in summer.

Not everyone's metrics are the same.

Here in the South, Costco is selling Organic Grade A Large Eggs are $6.16 per 18 (America dollars, no tax in Pennsylvania).; were $4.79 a month ago, and could get 24 for $5.69 four months ago (that brand not currently available, may have had an "incident" or Costco figured better to have a lower cost option).
