Fly Reels

Just finished another pair of reels - one RHW and one LHW. These are Perfect style Sun-Planet wind with spring detent clickers.

The reel bodies are fairly simple since all the action takes place on the winding plate.

The winding plate central shaft rotates within the outer shaft which screws into the spool. The driven gear assembly incorporates 3 spring plungers which ride against the circular pattern of divots in the reel body. This provides just enough force to prevent the spool from free wheeling.

The knob can spin freely so it will remain at the bottom when line is pulled out of the reel.

Awesome work. Not that I could likely ever produce such fine work but I'd love to learn that skill if for nothing else than to teach my son how craftsmanship and quality can come together and produce useful artifacts of art. Thanks for sharing and inspiring.

I was looking for some inspiration and I ran across this thread. Am I the only one who can't view the photo's associated with the comments? I only see the file name.

I just went back and checked some of my older threads when we were still allowed to link pictures to 3rd party hosting sites, and they're still there and loading fine............... ...

That's because it is a link, not an actual photo.

I'm well aware of the difference. I was poking fun at the fact that that was a big reason given to me why we can't link photos from hosting sites anymore was it breaks continuity in older threads. Yet here we are.....

A few more fly reels that I completed this summer...

The internal components and functions are similar for all three reels - the primary difference is the dimensions.

First - a 3-1/2" Anti-reverse cork drag trout reel

Next - a 4-1/8" Anti-reverese Rulon drag, large arbor reel. This one turned out to not have quite enough spool volume for the line which I intended to use so on to version II of the same reel.

Finally a 4-1/8" Anti-reverse Rulon drag reel with enough spool volume for it's intended use.

Beautiful. I don't know if those pictures make me want to take up fly fishing more or hang in your shop for a day and watch you make them.

Are you using some type of gun bluing on the frames, or is it some kind of nitriding or….
You do magnificent work. Thank you for showing your work.

Thanks guys

You are welcome to visit any time. I still need to make all the little bits for another reel

The black parts are 6061 Al finished with Type II anodizing. The anodizer recently acquired a laser etching machine, hence the name on the reels. A buddy had etched a few reels for me some years ago but he recently sold his business so I was out of luck until I found this anodizer.

Just let me know when you get the urge - I’ll send you some reasonably good engineering drawings.
That would be fantastic. I could have used the drawings a few months ago when I got home for the summer. I'm off to Ontario at the end of the month so all metal work will be on hold for a while. I'll contact you when I'm ready to head home again in about 6 months. Thank you I didn't know where to start with making things like that..
