first mill??

Unless the thrill of finding a bargain is your goal, you might consider ignoring the price and buying what you want now. Consider that each year that you don't have a toy is a year less that you'll be able to enjoy it.

That's all the encouragement I needed, not really but when head office hears the truck beeper backing up in the driveway I'll give her your name.

I have been looking at the craftex as mentioned in this thread, cx601, but I'm in no hurry, buy once cry once, I'll need a coffin big enough cause I'm taking it with me, and the lathe, sorry kids.

The advice I revived here was to look for a good used made in Taiwan smaller knee mill.

That was good advice. Found one with tooling and vise for $2500. I'm very happy with it. They do come on Kijiji every 6 months or so, when they do you will need to act because they usually don't last long.

Something like BB CX603 . I'm not sure if BB is still sourcing these from Taiwan, or if they now come from China? The older ones were from Taiwan.

I believe they all come from China now. I'll ask my contact.

That's the 3/4 sized bridgeport, the hobbyist dream mill. When I was looking, at the Grizzly version, likely Chinese , were pricey. I was going to wait for Grizzly scratch and dent tent sale.

In context, a new Taiwanese Rong Fu RF-45 is now $5,500 USD

All great "add a vice" here ;) thank you
I'll put the feelers out and brush up on what I need and what I think I need, kinda what I've told the kids over the years.
thank you....
any thoughts on a OXFORD 931 GEARED HEAD MILL/DRILL from China??

The Chinese are quite capable of doing fine work if they are willing to put the time and effort into it. That was why I suggested the trip to Bellingham. Yes, I know it's in the States. I have to think long and hard about a trip or even a purchase from there.

The dollar exchange has always killed us, and if I can find it here with "different stickers and paint" same thing and from the same place, that's where I am at. I think it's about 60% more after the US nails China for 30% and we get whacked another 25% in exchange rates, then duty and or taxes at point of entry.

Got an email back from Weiss:

If a Craftex CX-601 would be large enough for your needs, consider the King KC20VS-2 for $2399.99.
Got mine from the local Home Hardware (no KMS here in the East!) and they delivered it to my driveway for free. It's essentially the same as the Grizzly G0704, with all it's pros and cons. Installing three axis DRO and power feed on the X axis adds a lot of functionality.
I believe all these mills are made in China by Weiss, and I suspect they are being cleared out to make room for the new models which use 1100W brushless motors, as all these use 750W brushed DC motors.

I'm looking a BB tools, and David above is in contact with them and the msg reads brushless motors now, good thing. I see BB has the power feed add on as well but no DRO kit.

That's not quite the way I read @David's note. The way I read it, Busy Bee still sells their OLD machines. Their NEW machines are better in several ways and ARE NOT sold at Busy Bee.

They say their new machines are in stock in Canada. That's probably at Weiss but maybe David can clarify.

I should call them to make sure
