Never heard of "winter canola around here and we grow thousands of acres locally....any of the canola Im familiar with is extremely frost sensitive and dies with only a touch of frost.
Can I find out what the average income per hectare is? Also, if you don't grow any crops and let the land go to waste, will the government fine you? It's rare, but it's happening here and there. I suppose it's even possible to plant Soybeans on top of it if it ripens up fast enough. I was looking at some just this past Monday tjat is still green but the seed pods are already full. I don't know how long it takes before you can harvest.
Actually canola is quite frost tolerant when it is small and will even regrow when the top is froze off.the canola Im familiar with is extremely frost sensitive and dies with only a touch of frost.
Average income per hectare isn't a useful measurement really because the range can be sp extreme. It depends highly on the area, the crop grown, input expenses and fluctuating markets. No the government doesn't fine you if you don't plant a crop, there is enough common sense and economic incentives to prevent that sort of waste. Can I find out what the average income per hectare is? My father in law used to call that recreational tillage.Interestingly, lots of farmers do summer fallow which is leaving your land crop free and working the dirt for a year to control weeds
Another term I've heard for "recreational" tillage is "honey dew" tillage....that is when the wife is always saying " honey do this, honey do that" so the husband instead goes our and summerfallows, whether it needs it or not.My father in law used to call that recreational tillage.
