Controlling the mice population in our backyard

I park my trailer at a provincial park for the summer. The bucket traps are very effective, and can catch a ton of them. Some fridays aren't fun emptying them though, especially if its been hot out. Don't ever have one inside, and box it completly in with rocks. Skunks will chew through them to get to the mice as well, so buy spares.

When we had the kennel we had mice.
Picture a 5800 square foot building with 50 to 90 bowls of dog food on the floor twice a day and heated floors and unlimited water and 24/7 indoor outdoor access.
The only thing that kept mice under control was the good old fashioned Victor snap traps baited with peanut butter tied to the wall with a string.
Set a trapline at night and catch some every night, more in the fall when the weather turns cold and they start seeking heat. The string stops the wannabe amputees from wandering off out of sight.
The windup traps were ok but only work well when baited with other rotting mice, not cool.
Sticky traps work okayish if you don't mind stomping on wiggling mice every morning or peeling a sticky trap with a mouse on it off a yellow lab's head.
Ultrasonic repellants are complete bullshit.
Cats work well but are a problem in a building housing 50 to 90 dogs.
Snap traps work best but require daily maintenance. The best solution is to deny access. When we closed the kennel I sealed up the dog doors and within a couple of weeks we had zero mice in the building

@Elektrishun

The best bait I ever used for mice is peanut butter.

But even peanut butter can be improved with Tomcat Attractant Gel. I think I got it at CTire. Just a mouse turd of that stuff on Peanut Butter attracts them like crazy. But I use standard snap traps.

I've had mice seemingly lick the peanut butter completely off without triggering the trap. Cheese on the other hand is more solid and causes them to actually trigger the trap.

Only happened to me once cuz the trigger was too tight. If I am careful about making a hair trigger they end up dead.

I have a little container of peanut butter that I keep just for traps. I leave the lid off of it and the older it gets the thicker it gets. Between the peanut butter and messing with the latch until looking at it funny sets it off, I find the peanut butter brings them in better but your trap has to be up to snuff. Sometimes I will trip it a few times trying to place it, one learns to keep the fingers out eventually..... :p

rat

/rat/

noun

  1. 1.
a rodent that resembles a large mouse, typically having a pointed snout and a long, sparsely haired tail, concealed by their tailored suit. Some kinds have become cosmopolitan and drink them, too. Are sometimes responsible for transmitting diseases. Often found in court rooms and political offices taking bribes.
Ah. Heard about them. Never see them out here... :p

No toll roads, no rats. Hmmm...

The real producer, though, was the bucket/log roller traps.

Yes to this. They work well. Last fall I broke down and bought these ..... couldn't be bothered making more for $12 each. With a bit of peanut butter it seems to catch them right away, i.e. we never seem to see any "evidence" anymore but the occasional mouse shows up in the swimming pool. They enter the house (don't know how) and bolt for the peanut butter. Three traps on my "tapping line" now, basement, garage and main floor cupboard. No poison, no mutilated mice flipping about in the middle of the night, easy to clean ..... best solution yet.

For mice we have a Coco Channel Cinnamon Nutmeg (her full "legal" name.....), Coco for short....:D

She doesn't always work, but when she does, she's pretty effective. And no, I/We did not name her lol. She's a ~7yo rescue we acquired last year around this time when her owner unfortunately had to move to assisted living. She came with the name.....Not sure why we keep calling her by it, it's not like she answers to it anyway lol. Cats.....

I'm going to order some of those bucket traps just for backup when Coco is offline....I built a roller bucket trap years ago, but I like the covered top of these.

The roller traps worked well, filled with used antifreeze they work well in winter. Definitely effective.
And then I brought in some deadly backup and now the roller bucket has stayed empty for a year.

I almost picked up another cat this morning. A Tiny little black cat was into the neighbors garbage when I took the kids down to the bus stop. Pretty skittish, and definitely looks feral. Not any of the neighbors, so I'll see If I can get it to come to me today. I need to get a few barn cats to look after the place back there. Had a Racoon move in this fall, and destroyed the place in a short time. I still haven't dealt with the mess from it, but I dealt with the problem.

The city folks like to live trap the racoons and release them in the country. I like to live trap them and bring them back to the city.....

When the numbers get too high I let them go around here. The damn things carry lots of nasty diseases so I sterilize the trap under water for an hour or so. I find that makes releasing the racoons a lot easier too.

We have 3 cats, if they catch some creature outside it's food, if they catch one in the house it's a toy, and when they get bored of it they let it go.
