Brent Builds!!

So, it took a while to get things figured out with the pictures, had to email them to myself to reduce the size, anyway…..

Moved to New Brunswick from Ontario this past summer. This included the whole house and shop - story is on here somewhere….

I have a bunch of stuff, metal, wood, tractors, a side by side etc …. Needed to clear out some things from my new shop and garage. This is a 24 x 22 “Carriage House” with attic storage. Took about 2 weeks to build over a month and a half. Had to have the boys help with the trusses and standing walls. My neighbour is a roofer so I subbed out that job. He was nice enough to let me go to his big shop so I could bend up all the Fascia.

This was a fun build and will have more updates on it as I will be adding tool benches and such to make this my “auto shop “ and this spring will be a 1964 massy Ferguson 34 rebuild.

I poured the pad and just float finished. The floor is smooth, wire mesh and rebar reinforced 30 Mpa air entrained concrete with a 24”x 12 side and 5” deep field. 2x6 x 9 foot framing. Total build cost was about 30k including the 3.6k roof and 5.5k rafters. Storage area is 11’ x 23’ x 7 feet high.

Will update my shop in a bit … just pouring an ice cold beer out of the keg!

The Shop is currently 24 x 40. It is a mess and the big tools are still on pallets…. Alas….

Today I tightened up the loose gear on the mill, greased it up and installed the head!!!! Woo Hoo!! Not pretty operation by yourself but it is on!!

Next was setting ip machinist corner. Lathes were on a pallet and my boys stepped up and we lifted them off with the engine hoist.

Miss Metric and Mr Imperial will sit back to back until the machine shop is added onto the back of the 24x40. Currently working on layout and design. Would be an early to mid spring project :D

I'll be curious to see how you lay it out Brent. I'm hoping my new shop will be 20'ish x 35'ish.

That's a lot of shop space to fill. Looking forward to seeing it take shape.

Nice job on the carriage house build too. That's a pretty cheap build. Must not be a lot of palms to grease and other red tape out there? You'd be over 100k for that here easy.

So another update:

Things are flying by and already half of January is in the past. Spend a couple days emptying more boxes and filling bins and pullout trays with parts and pieces:
image4.jpeg

Built a stand for the Mitresaw that will have a couple drawers and another stack of part bins. The saw is level with the router table so I can chop long stock.

I then made a stainless top and cabinet base for the wine/beer area. Have 3 drawers to make and then this will be a lot nicer place to craft refreshments.

In the shop I made up a new cabinet for the drill bits, Kennedy boxes and additional tooling:

I re-arranged the lathes into an L configuration and installed the cabinet:

Out in the new building we have been busy building stoarge and work space for my sons and also for the yard machines:

The work bench is 21 feet x 27” across the back of the building. I put up the 1/2” OSB as it was $20/sheet verses peg board or other material. There will be some cabinets going up and I have a load of parts for my 70’ Opel GT, the tractor, the SxS etc. we will also be setting up space for a bunch of fittings and HVAC tools.

That is about it for now - busting out some crappy tile flooring today and will be replacing it properly with a membrane/new tile …. Also making some wine :p

Hey folks,

The picture size issue has delayed or put me off of updating things - tomorrow I will take the time and update the site. I just poured concrete for the shop extension (the metal working part) and a pool house/ garden shed) Busy times and will get all sorted out!

Ok. I hear you guys. I'll up the priority of a "how to" on uploading photos to get around the size limit.

@Brent H & @Ironman - what do you normally use to take photos, and what do you normally use to access the forum?

You asked earlier (sorry about my delay in responding):
I take pictures on an iPhone12 mini. It has the most updated iOS. It will not let me take pictures with reduced size so that they are easy to attach to a forum post.

My only way around is:
1- to use the zoom feature (when taking the pic) which is actually just cropping the photo. This is just indirectly reducing the file size; or
2- edit the picture, crop it, save the cropped picture, and then attach it to a forum post; or
3- take the pic with the wide angle view knowing that i will be cropping it later.

These are good suggestions Craig. They should help @Brent H and @Ironman as well as anyone else who uses an iPhone. I will incorporate these suggestions into the forum help section I am now building to help members get the most out of the forum.

Hopefully other Apple users will chime in here with other methods for iPhones and apple computers. Just like using a metal working machine, it always helps to have a toolbox full of different methods to solve a problem so you can pick and choose what works best for you and your situation. I'm going to take a few minutes right now in another post on this thread to tell members how I do this on my android phone and I'll also copy that to the new help section when it is ready to launch.

How to reduce photo file size on an Android S23 phone. Other androids may be similar and I'd appreciate feedback on how other work in this regard.

Similar to @CWret's iPhone suggestion, you can take a Telephoto (zoomed in) photo which is automatically a lower pixel count and a smaller file size. You can also crop that to an even smaller size.

Normally, I have my phone set to take high res photos. These are always too big for our server. I solve this by immediate entering the photo edit mode (just click on the new photo icon in the lower left after you take the picture and the click the pencil edit icon). From there you can crop the photo which will make the file size smaller by the crop ratio, and/or you can click on the three dot menu at the top right where there is a "Resize" command. From this menu you can also choose "Save As" if you want to keep the original photo as well as the resized photo. I typically just overwrite the smaller file over the original but if I want both I use save as add Small, Med, or High to the photo name.

At this point, I can upload the new smaller photo to the forum normally.

The same edit commands work the same way to resize existing photos from my photo gallery.

My phone also allows me to choose a default photo size for all the photos I take I don't use this option and prefer to take high res photos all the time and just resize them as needed.

I use a Sony DSC-HX200 camera and a desktop computer.

On Windows Desktop or Laptop Computers there are a million ways to skin the cat.

I prefer to use a free program I installed on my computer called IRFANVIEW. There are 32 and 64 bit versions available. It's a very simple, very old, very popular, very powerful program that is free for personal use. Once you install and use it, you will wonder how you ever lived without it.

I have seen the odd comment on-line which says it will install on some Macs too. But I cannot vouch for that or recommend it.

Some versions of the basic Paint program that comes with Windows also have some resizing capabilities.

Hey Guys,

So I have an iphone 15 and I have been trying - the camera mode seems to only allow a 12MP photo as the smallest. My only option is to download the pictures to my laptop or email them to myself at a reduced size, then go and add them. I can’t do this as easily as just posting from the phone - which I prefer - the pic’s are then fresh and I can put some information down right then (like measurements, cutting speeds etc). I will head over to the laptop and get some pictures coming.

@Brent H - here are some articles about reducing file size on iPhones and Macs. Some are the same as what @CWret suggested but there are a few additional suggestions too. I am not familiar at all with "shortcuts", but it does sound like a viable option.

We would all love to hear what Mac and iPhone users do to reduce photo sizes.

Last but not least, there is a free Apple App called "Image Size" on the Apple Store that is highly rated. It will resize photos among other capabilities. I don't have Apple products, so I can't try it or vouch for it, but maybe one of our Apple members (like @CWret or @gerritv or @DavidR8) can try it and comment.

Ya, this sounds like a RPIA. If I had to do that, I'd probably just stop posting photos.

Try the resize app in my earlier post.

I'm like you. I seldom use my desktop computer. In fact, I am writing this post on my android right now. I do 99% of my forum work from my phone. It's just sooooo convenient!

I also remember someone saying that there was a way to resize during the upload process exactly like the email process works. If someone can nail this down, I'm sure you and other members would appreciate it.

I open them in paint, then resize them with the scale option. 50% usually gets it under the size limit. I'm surprised at this point, it's not just a right click menu option in windows.
