I think @DPittman asked a pretty good question. And now I'm enjoying the stone throwing that I anticipated from the beginning.

My belt driven Taiwanese Generic runs a Norton style gear box for feed and threading. The older belt drives had change gears.

I had an older 12x36 generic that had was belt driven and had a nortin style gear box. It had one change gear when you had to do metric threading. I think it would have been a great lathe for a vfd conversion.
