Updating OS so far hasn't worked. However a security update to Safari means I can now write text messages. Time for bed.

Might be better off running Chrome as a browser?
Initially I tried to run Firefox. The problem I ran into is the same as trying to update say WIN-XP. To handle security and "enhance your user experience" which means advertising the browsers have been changed from what they were in 2008. Try and get an updated one and the reply is not supported for that platform. Doesn't matter if it's windows or apple. I don't expect Chrome would be any better.

An article from September 2023 suggests the following options for your OS version:

10.11.6 El Capitan - VIvaldi, Omniweb, Brave, Chrome, Opera, Firefox (July 2021 last Security update), Waterfox, iCab

note: for many El Capitan is the end of the line for their model. Any Mac that can be upgraded to 10.8.5 can be upgraded to 10.11.6

Mine is at 10.11.6 but the web page instructions show I can update the OS all the way up to the most current version. However I think I did something wrong in the update process at one point and now it remembers that and won't let me go higher without signing into Apple and getting approved for the upgrade. My understanding is this was supposed to work around that.

Today is machine shop day (I hope) so I'll try and get back to this later. But the fact that Safari did manage to update and now I can access this forum and actually write and not just paste pictures means there's no rush.

Plus the DVD drive needs to be replaced and running with a 2010 hard drive with unknown parentage (hours of operation) isn't the smartest thing either. But if I can't update the OS I don't want to spend any extra energy on it.

More info when I have it.

Quick update here. After a while away from it I followed a video and failed 4 times last night to install the Monteray OS. I left El Capitan on the hard drive but used the new (old on ebay) 500 GB SSD drive to install the 1.4.3 open core legacy patcher. Didn't seem to matter. Kept getting the complaint that it didn't recognize the keyboard and I should use a wired apple one. (don't have) The Bluetooth Apple ones are unreliable. Don't know if that's the keyboard+mouse or the BlueTooth in the MacPro.

Anyway. Thought I'd give it another go letting it first boot without a keyboard. Then when it booted again I plugged in the USB keyboard and mouse combo and suddenly it asked for the country I was in. The reset is now history I guess.

From what I understand it's now even possible to install Sonoma, the latest one using that new 1.4.3 open core legacy patcher.
Baby steps.

Thanks to @whydontu who sent me a USB drive I now have MAC OS running on the hardware.

The problem isn't so much the speed of video or the processor. The problem is that the Safari browser is out of date for the current type of web pages. So I can't use it to actually post text to this forum. I can post photos but can't post using the keyboard.

But this is definitely progress!
Fire Fox? Chrome? Opera? That is amazing progress John. EDIT-> looks like you're past that problem already anyway.

Does make you wonder why anyone would buy one of these. Under the covers it's still just a version of Unix. They've moved from the Intel Processor to their own.

Aside from the fact that she's stunning and has a nice accent this video discusses the merits of higher speed computers. She just upgraded hers. And judging by what she talks about she's not a pretty face doing the talk for someone else.

The first video of hers was this one where she talks about connecting all the different electronic controls etc.

Actually a thread on connecting all sorts of different devices should probably be the non-metal forum.

That is kind of like asking why doesn't everyone drive a big rig (ala ChickenLights)? Most of us don't need to be able to haul 80,000 pounds through the mountains, week after week.

I don't need a Mac Pro and it sounds like you don't need a (new) Mac Pro--but a company editing 8K video on deadline might. A firm doing high-end 3D modelling might. Rumour is that the 32-core Neural engine might be really handy for working in the latest buzzword field after the next Worldwide Developers Conference. Etc. In these cases, it is an investment that pays for itself in productivity.

Besides, if you want a very capable Mac, you can get a $1K Macbook Air. Seriously; read some reviews. If you want a crazy powerful desktop, a Mac Studio starts at $2k. Intel has been lost in the wilderness for basically 15 years--Apple Silicone has really shaken things up.

"Just a version of Unix"...as if they haven't provided anything on top?
