40" Metal Lathe, $1500, St. Catharines

you will need to know the weight to be able to make a plan.

An engine hoist will help disassemble the heavy bits if they are over 150lbs, otherwise a big, strong friend that works for beer is better.

I'm happy to supply beer! Big strong friends are welcome!

@Canadium : I get home on the 14th and may be able to move you on the 17th if you can get the person selling to wait.

In the mean time I would suggest you do a strip down of all the loose gear (tooling, chucks, tailstock etc etc.) Unbolting from the base so it can be moved as two units.

How are the stairs - up and straight out or some beastly corners? Can it be trolleyed and ramped up?

If it is the weekend I may be able to round up my sons and a buddy - any specs on the unit as far as weights?

Congrats!!

Strip down is well underway. I brought back a few hundred pounds of parts on my first return home. Going back on Tuesday to make a more concerted effort. Stairs are pretty much straight up. Probably could be trolleyed and ramped. I was picturing myself using a come-along on a ramp. The bolts holding the bed to the base are not very accessible. I think the owner is hoping it can be moved within a couple of weeks. However the house is not currently occupied. They are just working on emptying the contents. I did point out that getting it out of his basement would be the big issue and he seemed to understand. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Did the seller say how it was moved into the basement?

I would think that if you stripped it down to the bed it shouldn't be that hard to cart the pieces out. Any feel for how much the head stock weighs?

Congrats on the new lathe.....Did you grab the tailstock? damn things are known to vanish

Another thought. Get a 600lb flatdeck dolly (or make one out of 3/4" ply and 4 swivel casters). drill 4 holes in the centre of the flat sides so you can ratchet strap things like the headstock to it, and tie a substantial rope to it so some one (or 2) can be at the top fo the stairs hauling while someone (or 2) can be guiding it up the stairs on plywood ramp... This will be work quite well up to about 250 lbs, and then come-alongs and winches begin looking quite good.

@Canadium : just let me know, I cannot really help till after April 14 th so good luck - hopefully you can get it home. Sounds like a good score on tooling to get you going right off the hop. Excellent!

Inaccessible bolts are my specialty - there is always a way :p

Seller is machinists son and knows very little about how it was done other than his Dad had a couple friends help him and went down the stairs in pieces. Now idea how much the headstock weighs. I have no way to measure the weights.

I have 4 flatdeck dollies I got at an auction some time ago with double 3/4 plywood deck. No idea what the rating would be but they sure look heavy duty. I hadn't thought of using them this way. I thought they would be difficult to control if I was doing it myself.

Thanks everyone for your replies and ideas! Much appreciated!

I'm glad you got it. I think this is the first Member Spotted Deals post I've made that someone actually jumped on.

Did you take any pictures while you were there?
