I've started cleaning and making piles of junk to sell and junk for the dump...
While I'm getting sorted out for my first project I want to make 3 flat pieces of metal using the Whitworth 3 Plate Method.
No parallel or square but flat to 5 millionths or better.
Make the plates, acquire the metrology gear to test to better than 5 millionths reliably and repeatably. (without certification).
So
3 flat pieces of steel with hand tools ( an angle grinder is a hand tool. A surface grinder and a mill are not hand tools ).
A surface plate.
flatten the surface plate
Manual tools to prove that the surface plate adequately flat
I probably can't afford a tool that can give me numbers but i should be able to setup go, no-go tests.
If it's shiny I could manually grind an optical flat to examine the pieces of steel using their reflection and a vapour light of some wierd element.
I want to try air bearings but not this year.
