Whatcha got for punch and chisel storage?

My temporary solution for punch and chisel storage never was very good and has been in place for too long as I haven't found a better solution.

I think maybe a shallow drawer would be best where everything can be laid out and seen easily is what I'd like but I don't have that sort of drawer space nor the "real estate" it would take.

Anyone have the perfect solution?

I have my frequent users in this mobile vise/tool stand. Small general purpose center punch, small cold chisel, and big cold chisel for when it didn't listen the first time.

and a drawer full of big punches, chisels and star drills in a toolbox under my welding table. The top right hand drawer of my Kennedy top box has some smaller prick and center punches for layout work, along with my scribes, and a few spare rules and small squares. The one below it my drive pin punches in brass and steel.

At work, they all live in one drawer in my bottom roller.

I don't have the best system, but am chipping away at consolidating my tools into better usable locations as I cleanup and organize the shop on an ongoing basis. Ive got 3 stack of mismatched toolboxes that I would like to consolidate into one larger one by the spring. That should free up a lot of room and make working out there a lot better once I learn where everything is again. The past 10 or so years I've been in accumulation mode, buying up good tools at good deals, whenever I had spare cash and stuffing them wherever I can. Too many duplicates, and toolboxes sitting around "as purchased". I'm finally starting to go through them all, and slowing down on the buying....

once I learn where everything is again.

Now that right there is the biggest problem of all...... At my age, I'm just not gunna do that to myself needlessly. After you hit your finger with the hammer for the 263 time, you eventually learn to let somebody else hold the nail.

Ok, no wise cracks this time.

Like a few others said most of mine are in the original tray if that fits flat and doesn't have to be opened and doesn't trap moist air in with them. Otherwise, most of them get thrown together in a narrow drawer. My really good ones (smithing punches and pin drifts) are in plastic (or wooden) blocks with holes drilled to fit the punches standing upright. I keep a VCI tab in enclosed containers like this one.

The top right hand drawer on my Snap Off tool chest is packed with punches and chisels, dig thru to try and find the proper one. Then there is another large assortment of big stuff at the anvil stand, plus i have a steel bucket full of assorted punches and chisels. Also an assortment in both tractor tool boxes. Still never have the one i need on a particular repair.

+1 on a shallow drawer
I’m designing the drawers for my Mill’s stand: 3 x 2.5” deep; 3 x 3.5” deep; 1 x 5” deep (inside measurement).

What’s your opinion on the 2.5” drawers, would you make them shallower?

I picked 2.5” and 3.5” because I can use the 2” and 3” plastic containers that seem to be popular.

My shallow drawers are 2” outside- 1-3/4” inside depth. Next size up is a 4”, I didn’t measure but I’m guessing its the same 1/4” loss

Personally for pliers, screwdrivers, punches, etc I prefer the shallower drawers, there’s no need to be deeper, in my opinion

Thanks for taking those measurements!!!!

Below is my tool chest.
- The top draw has outside depth of 1-1/2”, with an inside depth of about 1-7/16”. I’m currently using it to store micrometers because it‘s feels like it’s too shallow to store anything else.
- The next drawer is 2-3/8” inside depth. I like the depth of this drawer.
- The next size drawer is 3-3/16” inside depth, it feels like it’s a little too deep and could end up wasting space.

Perhaps I should look at building more 2.5” drawers, and two less 3.5” drawers? Image below of how this looks on my stand model.

I have 3 different punch locations and one chisel location, In the shop, the top left hand drawer of a snap-on type toolbox holds all the chisels from very small to an FBH size and also a set of punches also from very smallm for gun work to very big for persuasion work, another box sits beside my drill press and every drill bit I break or bugger up goes into that box to be used as "perfect sized" punches for gun work. Also have one of the wife's old cake pans in the basement gun room with a full set of punches (& a lot of broken drill shanks) for when I'm doing a tear-down/repair in the house.
