What is this used for?

So found these calipers and do not know what this little notch is used for. Any Ideas?
Also is there a particular name for this style of caliper or is this a generic vernier caliper?

Thanks.

Well the scale has some numbers reversed on it.
So maxes at 6 when fully closed.
When that scale is at 0 (Fully open) does that notch line up with the end of the caliper?
Just wondering if it was meant to catch and stretch something maybe?

AAAAAAAannnnnnnnnd my guess was wrong :)
Found a few of these gauges without the reverse numbers on it like yours but still has the notch

Boley Style Gauge
In this video they just use it to hook their thumb nail into it.
