Saw this on FB Marketplace. Old iron was often designed by folks who understood how the tools would be used, and not constrained by accountants and a desire to make it pretty.

The designer of this made some odd choices, such as the lever operator. But an inspired choice of the factory-installed arc left and right of the table centre hole. How many thrashed drill presses have you seen with an arc of f-ed up holes in the same place, caused by drilling through the table by mistake?

That lever is a very bad choice. As it is depressed, the angle of the spindle will change. No good for drilling straight holes. A knuckle in the spindle or a slot in the lever can fix this, but there has to be enough rigidity to force the pin into the correct location
