I have no milling or lathe experience. I'm planning on getting a 500-pound class bench top mill in the near future & then adding a rotary table. I have limited shop space and no real plans to get a lathe but this little guy at $150 could tuck under my workbench and just come out now and then to finish off a part. Not much to lose at just $150 - and it's only 45 minutes away.
What do you think?
Thanks
Craig

FYI - I sent him a message the same time as i sent this to you - Said "price ok & i can come get it this morning" added my cell number. Didn't hear back & now kijiji says its no longer available.

It's a cute little toy. And they are very popular. So you could get parts for it. And it would certainly be great for pen making and other small work. For someone with a very small shop or someone who just wants to make small parts, it's probably perfect.

But I would have voted against it - for you anyway. Reading your intros, I think you need more lathe than that. Even though it's only 150, that's still 150 that distracts from tooling or 150 more on something a little bigger. But I do understand "the urge" ....... And it's soooooo cute too!

So in a way, it's a blessing that it's gone.

Was a whim - yes cute. In hind sight, I agree & I'm glad I didn't waste time (or the 150) on it.

The head is indexable? I never thought I’d see that.

Me either. I was going to comment on it earlier and got caught up in the other issues. I've never seen that in my whole life. Apparently a common feature on this lathe. Be nice if it had vertical nod indexing too!

In capable hands, people have built steam engines and clocks with these (if it also has the milling column). You don't need a big lathe to make decent projects, just work within its size.

Head stock rotates, so turning tapers is possible. Spindle moves in-out as well although no feed handle shown in the one photo above. With the milling column it becomes a vertical mill or excellent small drill press.

It pivots, allows for taper turnring (no compound). The pin is only for 90

Some times some real deals come up. There was a whole box of accessories on facebook for $25 the other day. didn't last long....then I noticed this ad a day later:

imo 95% of vendors make no effort to investigate the value of what they have. 2% of those err on the low side :). Thats when you go....but you better have the car warmed up....people like Wayne means any amazing deal is only going to last hours.

I got a unimat when I was 12, bought it used I think for $20 and Dad cosigned for a bank loan. (He could of spotted me, but I think he wanted me to feel the heat....hated the #&@!$ oligopoly Cdn banking system ever since lol) Worked on farms and later for my Dad (mustn't have had child labour laws then, worked my first summer at 13, 25 cents an hour) for a few summers to buy all the accessories. I don't have it anymore, but I do have a Unimat 3 that sometimes sees use (they are still small but a little more substantial with V ways)
