I've been desiging my own custom brushless motor. During the R&D phase of this project I intently followed the developments of axial flux motor designs and the disruption that those motors are bringing to traditional radial flux motor industry. I've scoured the patent documents of most of the leading designs to see what I could borrow for the design of my own brushless motor design for a ebike/motorbike
By far the most interesting development I've seen though is a motor that uses a complex 3D magnetic flux path to maximize the torque produced by a motor. The developers say it is like 4 motors in 1 due to the use of both radial and axial flux paths in the same motor.
A couple of years ago, when I found that a company in Texas called Linear Labs had invented a revolutionary new motor called the Hunstable Electric Turbine (HET) named after the company’s co-founders Brad and Fred Hunstable, I immediately knew that this technology was going to kick ass. This technology will likely not only disrupt the existing electric motor design, it will likely kill all new axial flux path only motors, and circumvent and undercut several large corporation's axial motor IP portfolios. Looking at you mercedes. It wont be long until chinese firms are ripping off these designs. I am sure. Otherwise, they're toast.

To quote from the an magnets business and technology article from Dec 2020
"The company says that its patented HET motor technology is an entirely new class of electric machine, producing up to twice the torque of competitor motors, or the same torque in half the size, which can be made using rare-earth or ferrite magnets. The design is based upon a magnetic flux tunnel featuring both dual axial flux and dual radial flux rotors tied together around one stator, meaning it is effectively four motors working as one.
The initial phase of production will include the 200 series motor, which the company says can provide twice the amount of peak torque of its closest competitor, at 108 Nm with bursts up to 140 Nm. The motors are also 1.7 kg lighter than competitors, with average efficiency over the RPM range of 88 percent versus the competitions’ 59 percent, and with Linear Labs’ motors offering peak efficiency of 92 percent. "
NOTE: The 3D flux path in these motors is so advanced and efficient that they can be made WITHOUT rare earth magnets and still outperform other motor designs. Functionally, this means that we can have a 3 HP lathe motor that is smaller, has a superior torque curve, and does not use any rare earth materials, which protects against supply disruptions. The motor industry as a whole is moving to eliminate China from the supply chain for all EV motors and eventually ALL motors. This motor will be far more efficient that the new motor designs coming out that are 100% induction and do not use rare earth magnets.
Exciting times.
Motors of this design can be made in any size... tiny high torque ebike motors, skateboard motors with crazy levels of torque... able to run twice as long due to greater efficiency. Cars, meh easy peasy... massive industrial motors, new lathe motors... you name it.
Now when only one company is making such motors I don't get too excited...
But now there is another big player and they just dropped a HUGE automotive development.
Swedish hypercar maker Koenigsegg has developed their own magnetic tunnel electric motor, that weighs just 63 pounds, yet develops 335 hp and 443 lb-ft of torque. Such energy efficient motors will yield range improvements too, and soon we will see cars with stupid HP levels and neck snapping acceleration.
