Sourcing Hand Reamers

It's time to get some reamers. Having a heck of a time sourcing plain jane imperial HSS hand reamers. Everything on amazon, Aliexpress, banggood etc appears to be metric chucking reamers. Not interested in adjustable reamers. Initially a set 1/8, 1/4, 3/8, and 1/2 would suite me fine. That set of 4 from KBC is worth $200:eek:

Where else can I look?

Thanks,

Craig

Amazon has some if you look long enough so which type is the better choice a straight flute or spiral flute or is the spiral just for hand reaming? I’d think there would be more chance of it biting in under power.

Spiral flute v.s straight flute? Good question Tom! The only reamers I have played with were straight flute.

Spiral flute, chucking or hand, are necessary if you are reaming a hole with an interrupted cut, e.g. with a slit or keyway. Outside of that I think the spiral ones chatter less.
Regardless, it is important to leave enough metal to have the reamer do its job.

Chucking reamers are easy to sharpen, they cut at the end only. Hand reamers are more challenging to sharpen.

I have used both chucking reamers and taper shank reamers as hand reamers. Reverse spiral are excellent to use as hand reamers.

For straight shank, I would grind a square on the end or if smaller, use a drill chuck.
With a taper shank, put a tapping handle on the tang.

Anywhere else before I order from KTS? Neither Brent H or Tom K couldn't help me.

Spiral or straight flute? Any suggestions? Spirals are only $20 more for the set....

I like spiral flute for hand reaming, seem less likely to get a chatter going. Spiral flutes jump holes and keyway better too, straight flute kind of drop in and can make a wallow on one side.

Well.... I'm pretty impressed by KTS. Placed an order yesterday and this morning I got an email explaining that one of my spiral reamers was in a 4-5 month backorder state and asked if I wanted to cancel it from the order. I asked them to substitute a straight flute reamer for the backordered spiral reamer and further explained that I had accidently ordered two 1/8" reamers when I had only wanted one. They promptly fixed me up and refunded me for the extra 1/8" and price difference for the straight flute reamer. Just got an email that my stuff is with DHL.

Now their website on the other hand leaves a lot to be desired. I created an account but can't for the life of me figure out how to view and change my account information.
