I did not squire..... but as I will be voyaging to his place of making in the coming week I will make said inquiry and report back. Are there items for which you currently seek that if found I should make haste to alert you?

Nay good Sir! My query was more along the lines of where this gentleman might have acquired the rare parts; like do tell what part of the 401 did his gaze fall to the glistening handle of the tailstock? Did someone in great haste make off with a lathe purchased and fail to notice his desperate chariot chase....taper attachment outstretched, falling in anguish as the purchaser disappeared into the night .....

The things bed time stories are made from........

I could use a 9" Utilathe follower rest.....

When I saw the add this morning I couldn’t type fast enough. Having just acquired the SM Series 2000 13” lathe I believed it to be too good to be true; and in Hamilton, 10 min from my house. I’ll have a good look around when I am there next week and see if he has anything extra. I’m not sure if the taper attachment is complete as the photo seems to be missing some elements, but according to the seller it is complete so fingers crossed! I tip my hat Brent for a “rousing old english banter”, and I will in future pick up where we have left off.

@TOBARApprentice : t'was very noble of you to respond in character - good laughs...

Yes, have a look around. There was a few Kijiji adds up "looking for" a tailstock for a 13" Series 2000 - not sure if you "wanted to chance" a cheap offer and resell - there was a number of lathes that all seemed to need one.

Typically the thing missing with the taper attachment is the follower block that the cross feed extension bolts too. from the picture, that is not there.

If you can "Snoop" about and have a look it will be a cast iron block about 1-1/2" wide and about 2-1/2" long - maybe around 1" thick and of course a slot that fits the taper bar. Both @YYCHM and I had to make one.

I believe the guy selling it was going to fabricate that part today. When I spoke with him he said that it was missing but that he’d provide it. Good to know that you guys have these lathes too; and that you are relatively close by, if not to home, the cottage. I’m going to have lots of questions when it comes to setup etc. The focus in the next couple weeks is the move, then to the new shop build and I have scheduled the lathe pickup for late Aug, early Sept....... then I have to sort out getting it apart and down the stairs; pretty sure I have the logistics mostly figured.

I’ll let you know what I find when I go to pick up the attachment, but thanks for the heads up.

Cheers,

Derek

Hey everyone! I met John. Great guy!! He has a Standard Modern 13” Series 2000 that he is parting out. His user lathe is the same but he’s got lots of spares! Seems like he wants to sell stuff in assemblies. Like if you need a specific gear for the apron you may have to buy the whole apron, but you never know; so ask away. The tailstock is beautiful, and he says he’s open to offers. I saw a stand, bed, gear cover, headstock (with a damaged gear or 2) apron, carriage, the tail stock, compound, (that’s a fun game; list all the parts of a lathe!). He has a complete lathe that he’s parting out...... boy was that a long explanation.

Hopefully this is of use to some or all of you. Just as an aside, my lathe came with approximately 6 original manuals that would be for the Series 2000 11 and 13, but generally cover the 1334 and 1340 respectively. It’ll be September before I list them in the Classifieds but pm me if you might be interested. Thinking about $50 each but they are not reprints, they are actual manuals from SM (for the purists, lol).

Cheers all!

Derek

Pray tell good sir, what account did you deposit the ransom money in? I did not receive notification yet of a clang of gold coins in the box.

Gerrit

Hey Craig why not make one can't be all that difficult a project.

Ya, @Brent H (thanks Brent) posted the dimensions for one, but it looks to be something that should be 70% fabricated (i.e. welded construction) and 30% machined. I may get there yet LOL...

New Shop...and.....Down The Stairs.... don't belong in the same paragraph????

If I had an extra million dollars there would have been an outside shop. I know that things in Calgary are a bit more reasonable, but a detached home in Southern Ontario is averaging 1 million at this point. So I am happy to pay a rigging company a couple thousand to get the Standard Modern and my mill safely to the bottom of the stairs. And there are a number of benefits to the basement shop..... It’s heated or air conditioned year round and it’s secure as starting points. And I’ve never found any of my tools rusting! They are generally only rusty when I get them, lol. With all that said, an outdoor shop does have its benefits as well; just playing the hand we’re dealt.

Cheers.

Ahhhhh good sir..... me know-est not of these ransoms. For we are brotheren, and as such, your carriage house, is my carriage house. It does hold within it many items of mine ownership which you stuard on my behalf. If memory recalls the items are many and wide ranging in variety. Fear not however as my gratitude will be repaid, as I possess items to trade and flasks of spirits. For when the scourge of these times are behind us I shall voyage to your castle and release you of the burden of their charge.

I bid you fair sabbath, but will dispatch with message my fastest pigeon later this day...... I’ll just give you a call; it’s faster and better.

Cheers.
