How do you keep the little chips in the basement and out of the upstairs?

The other half picked up a chip in her slipper the other day and was less than impressed, it didn't sit to well with me either. I try to clean my clothes off before coming in the house but apparently that doesn't always work as well as I thought.

Anyway, looking for suggestions that don't cost $100k for a new shop.

It's tough. I find that aluminum is worse than steel (or maybe it's more visible because it's shiny?)
I wear a leather apron in the shop so the potential for chips clinging to my clothes is less. Nevertheless before I leave the shop I stomp my boots on the floor and shake out my sleeves and pant legs. And I have to go outside to get back in the house so most seems to fall off before I get inside.

What's wrong with a new shop.....?

It's happened to me a few times too. But my wife solved the problem for me. She is a total neat freak. Typical Italian. Polar opposite of the organized chaos hairy guy she seduced 55 years ago. She laid down the law a while back after a similar experience. Now I have shop shoes that I wear in the shop, outdoor shoes for the yard, and indoor slippers only worn in the house. It works.

Ya, I forgot to mention clothing. I have a couple of hard denim sleeveless shop aprons I wear "most of the time". I especially like it cuz I can keep a pen, a pencil, a sharpie, a small 64ths ruler, and a scribe in the breast pocket.

Different shoes. I use old runners as shop shoes/house shoes and step in and out them like slippers. The cushioning is also nice standing on concrete floors. Shop shoes should don't get worn in the house

I do all of the suggested yet the little buggers still find their way in. I have shop shoes that stay in the shop, wipe my feet on an old chunk of carpet, long leather apron, brush of the clothes, spin around twice, click my heels together three times and say "chippies be gone" but it doesn't work.

The other half is probably going to hook up a metal detector to an electronic door lock, if no metal is detected when I walk thru then the door will open and let me in the house.

Thanks for the suggestions.

Different shoes and lots of cleaning.

I have a magnetic broom too. I suspect that eventually I’ll imbed a shaving into my house shoes and will scratch the wooden floors.

I dream of having a shop where I can let a patina of time naturally develop (ie one I don’t have to clean all the time).

Like the good Canadian boy that I am, I have a pretty convincing apology at the ready at all times, then I blame the dogs if that fails.
Before that happens, I have a carpet inside the door and usually another one on the house side and slippers at the ready. I say usually, 'cause puppies have impacted life in every way lately. Who's got time for the shop?

Thanks for the suggestions.

One last suggestion - totally overkill but we can't know how desperate you are.

How about a complete clean room with 2 doors on it. Take everything off in the shop, go through a door. Change into your home clothes. Open the inside door. Make your wife happy.

No way I'd do that, but again - no idea how desperate you are. Actually yes I do know. That silly dance was REALLY desperate.

Build a shop for $75k and brag to your loved one how much money you saved

Mine is in a detached garage and I still seem to bring some in, and I usually wear coveralls when I'm in the garage and shoes are off at the door. No matter where it is, you better bet you're gonna hear it if anyone but yourself finds said piece of metal though lol. I think most stick to the bottoms of your shoes then track in

I think its obvious you are doing everything right and it can't be your fault at all, clearly she picked up the chip she was obviously walking somewhere there was chips, maybe a reminder of where your other fingers are when you are pointing finger. I think a little root cause analysis might exonerate you:rolleyes:

1) I do the shoe thing.
2) temporary chip barriers to keep the chips on the machine or close to the machine.
3) PA, rubber mats with the holes in help a bit.
4) I vacuum up while the CNC is doing it's thing.

Nothing, ever, in any context, will exonerate you. You are always guilty despite any and all evidence to the contrary. This the is law of co-habitation and must be accepted if you wish to maintain the peace.

Take everything off .......down stairs......... Walk upstairs naked. ;)

A chip on the floor will become acceptable.......real fast.

How old are you?

My bride would laugh herself silly if I came upstairs naked...... and then she would switch to bitching about all the swarf in my fur.

you would love my shop...the floor gets swept up couple or 3 times a year weather it needs it or not.
I dont have much trouble with chips being tracked into the house as my shop is couple hundred feet from the house and byt the time I walk from it, my shoes are scuffed clean of scarf and my shoes come off imediatly after entering the house ( a cary over habit from when we had cattle on the place & "shit happens"). But there has been the very odd piece of scarf show up on the entrance mat thet the boss will mention immediately....but I disarm her objections by mentioning the "sewing needles" I used to find with my feet/toes hidden in the house carpets when she was a seamstress for a living....the chip complaints die away to a muffled grumble right away.
