Old delta drill press

Hi from Salmon Arm I have just bought a17 inch delta drill press it has a 2 mt would it be possible to make it a 3 mt
If you replaced the entire spindle with a MT3 one or are you wondering about having it bored out to 3mt? I suppose there might be enough material to remove to get up to a MT3 but that would require a internal boring job followed by a mt3 reaming. I highly doubt that much could be just reamed out if that is what you were thinking.

I've seen adapter sleeves like links below but have no idea if they are viable for a drill press. Because now you would presumably have an arbor > sleeve adapter > spindle, all friction fit & all somehow removable. The taper angle is one thing, but there is also the issue of diameter of big & small end. Might have some unexpected stick-out. There are related standards but its never clear with many imports what you are getting without a dimensioned sketch.

If its more a matter of you wanting to install a specific chuck that has MT3, unless its an integrated shank, might be better to get the appropriate MT2 adapter matched to whatever the socket taper on the chuck is. Tooling places carry those.

i was wondering about boring it out to 3mt and if any one has done that i tried to send pic but the file was to big i will try to send a pic of the spindle

At the very least you would have to take the spindle out to bore it as it takes some horsepower to bore a MT taper. I have a modern asian made drill press and those machines of the same size are basically the same and a spindle swap is likey possible with those as so.e came with larger spindle MT than others. I wouldn't expect you would be so lucky with an old delta.

Oh ya back to boring out the original spindle.... it may be hardened which would make boring it out either VERY hard or impossible.
