Hello,

I am hobbyist with little experience using a metal lathe. I have a South Bend 10-K Gap Bed bench lathe (Cat No. CL770RG).

The lathe has been in my possession for many years but I haven't had much time to learn how to use it. Now that I am retired I am hoping to change that. I need to spend some time getting it set-up starting with a proper V-belt. Decided to join the forum to engage with other enthusiasts.

Thank-you

Welcome to the Forum.
Nice looking lathe.
This is a great place to help you get the most out of your lathe time.

Welcome. This forum is great place to help you going with your new hobby. Great lathe.
I have to warn you however.... you will not have as much leisure time in retirement as you though you would.

Welcome from Ontario Farm Country. Basically gardens to you western guys.

But I was born in SK so I like my garden.

Electricians are welcome here.

I agree with @DPittman. They lied to you. Retirement is no vacation. You will soon wonder how you managed to get anything done when you were workin.

Very nice lathe to learn on.... Very well tooled and a bit of an oddball being as it is a gap bed. One doesn't see many of those.
Welcome from Lillooet BC.

Welcome from Ottawa glad your getting the opportunity to explore this hobby.
What part of SK (go riders) are you from? I spent the first 43 years in Sask and get back every few years.
Lots of good information here and lots of good laughs.

I expect time management will be just as important in retirement as it was when working since I have acquired many interests. The following are a few of my interests:

- in my twenties I started repairing and refinishing antique furniture after getting to know my wife's family who were once avid collectors of such items. That experience resulted in acquiring old and modern woodworking tools, joining the Saskatchewan Woodworkers Guild, and building furniture such as the oak crib that all 3 of my children used. I am no longer a guild member. Family life and work life left no time for membership. But I still have the tools and occasionally make use of them.

- I was planning on becoming a carpenter but took a left turn along the way and became an electrician. I still enjoy carpentry work and doing small projects.

- while in electrical school I became interested in electronics. After completing trade school I continued with my interest in electronics by acquiring various electronic test equipment, building various circuits, building electronic test equipment, and repairing electronics. Recently I built an FM transmitter after I began looking into radio communication.

- I have a strong interest in computers and just about anything that relates to a computer working with both Mac, Windows, and Linux software.

- the electronics and computer interest led to an interest in microcontrollers like Arduino and Raspberry Pi. I plan on taking an online computer programming course to further develop my programming abilities when working with microcontrollers.

- for the most part, I have been repairing my family's vehicles. But sometimes the repair is beyond my skill and tool selection.

- I believe in the Right to Repair and there is not much I won't attempt to fix. Having said that, there are times when some repairs are better left for the pros, especially if safety is a major factor.

What fuels a lot of my interests is the joy that comes with solving a problem while learning something new.

Back to the lathe...
I have used my metal lathe to make some minor repairs but I know there is a lot more it can do than what I am currently capable of. Having an extra 40 hours a week of free time should help with acquiring a little more knowledge and skill.

So that's a little bit about me. I appreciate the welcoming comments. Thank-you

Born, raised and never left Saskatoon. I have travelled a little bit over the years but I can't imagine living anywhere else. Disney in Orlando is supposed to be the "Happiest Place on Earth". It was a nice family vacation spot but my happiest place on earth is still my garage in Saskatoon.

How about yourself?

Well, I am always willing to help family and friends who are in need. That will always be a welcome demand on my time and it could get busier now that I am retired.

But for those people who are not really in need and are simply looking for a "deal" I have stopped accepting payment in pizza and beer. That policy will definitely keep some people off my doorstep. :)

I was raised on a farm closest place was Bemersyde and that was one store and one elevator and when the elevator burned down and it went the way of many little places, School was in Glenavon and then off to work in the big city of Regina, in 2009 was lucky enough to get a promotion and moved out to Ottawa and really enjoy it here.
Like every everywhere places have their good and bad points, I always enjoyed my time in Sask as I enjoy my time in Ottawa now.
