Well, happy to say I've just upgraded my milling capabilities.

Seller was a really nice fella, pursuing a new direction in life, and needed it gone to accommodate the sale of his home. He threw in a ton of tooling and such, the rotary table and 6" vise, and sold me a nice Tig welder he forgot he had.

The mill was, aside from some light rust on the bed, in new condition.

Thanks for the find on this one, it's a huge addition to the shop, and I'll be sure to pass on the good karma again!!

Foe sure, You suck. Good buy.
It's an easy recipe, which I've learned from all you fine folks here on CHMW:

-I promised myself I'd spend no more than 10% of new retail on anything for the shop build; therefore the wife is happy, thus I am happy.
-I don't haggle on price when it looks to good to be true, I just go.
-I inspect the hell out of the equipment, top to bottom. I'm standing there, with cash in hand; nobody cares if I spend an hour looking at their machine.
-It's cheaper to rewind a 575v motor to 220-3PH with a VFD, then wait for the right machine.
-U-haul doesn't charge mileage on trailers.
-I never ever bring friends to help, because they will always find a way to tell me somethings wrong with it.
-I don't let bad paint and dirt overrule good bearings and ways.
-Always look for the M in the casting for Mehonite.
-If someone else needs it, sell it to them for what you paid, and bank some karma points with the machine gods.
-Despite what the stamped rating is, a Dodge Ram 1500 from Enterprise with unlimited rental miles can easily carry a 2400lb surface grinder, a 600lb surface plate and a 300lb crate of mag plates at highway speeds. Ya, sure, the rear wheels drag on the fender wells like a Carolina Squat, but that's what the $17 "All Perils" box is for on the rental agreement....

Happy hunting!

I strongly concur in almost all of this list to the point it is as if I wrote this myself.

Be able to get there fast and flash the cash. Then take as many hours as you need. Bring tools, open up the machine and get right into it unless the price is so low that you can afford any fix or the machine is so rare you wont ever find another in your life.

Bad paint, and dirt is not necessarily a bad thing. But rust, standing water are in my books because it indicates how much the owner respects the equipment and how well maintained and repaired the equipment will be. I wont ever buy a machine that has been stored outdoors for more than a couple of days, and never one with standing water sitting on it in person or in photos.

I just can't concur with the don't bring a friend for help. I'm too old and decrepit to move heavy machines alone. But I also have a brother who thinks almost like I do but it a fair bit more impulsive so he needs me to prevent him from rash decisions and not the other way around.

I heartily recommend that anyone looking for larger equipment that is common in 575V find a local motor shop and start building a relationship with them

I was referencing my friends, lol. Lazy C*nts the lot of them. They're all scheming bastards who would sell their grandmothers for shiny tools.

TheStelster gave me a great recommendation for a motor shop; Premier Electric Motors in GTA, Ontario.

Commenting on the 575v issue. It isn’t a big deal to get a small transformer 575-240 in 3 phase. It is sort of the same idea as a machine requiring 3 phase power, it scares some folks off and makes the machine cheaper for me. By adding an appropriate transformer to your 3 phase system, one can simply keep plugging in more machines. I have 4 such machines (7 motors) - of course changing motors or rewinding them is “possible” but the transformer works well for me.

The only problem with that solution is that it takes a VFD out of the equation. Yes, a VFD can drive a transformer, but you lose the direct feedback loop that is normally used to control the motor for SLV position sensing, slip, etc.

It's not an option I would personally consider for machines like mills and lathes etc but absolutely a good solution for fixed load drive systems in other machines like grinders, sanders, and band saws, etc.
