Mitutoyo America??

Oh, how the mighty have fallen!

I needed, well, wanted to upgrade my thread pitch gauges. I was going to order Starrett, but they were almost double the price so I figured Mitutoyo.

2 of the gauges, wrapped in a sealed baggie, inside a plastic case, in a box, with certificate of warranty. And stamped made in Japan. Nice! Very nice!

The other, just a plastic sleeve. Sticker on the sleeve, Mitutoyo America. Nowhere near as nice. It's not junk, but not nearly as nice. :(

Yes something has happened, at least to some of the product lines. By something I mean outsourcing at potentially lower quality standards. For a long saga look for my MIT parallel set fiasco thread. The plastic & box is forgivable, but cutting corners on the instrument itself is not a good thing. Especially at premium prices. Its the way of the world. Starrett started outsourcing certain items & keeping others, it was kind of a low level / high level split. Then I think more recently they have been completely bought out as an enterprise & some are predicting further degradation? I read about people spending $400 on a Jacobs precision chuck that was not so precision even compared to a $100 offshore chuck. The rep sheepishly admitted that many models have been outsourced for some time letting people assume the Made in USA really only applied to a subset. Well when we become State 51 the customs/shipping will be more reasonable haha

Since the adjustable parallel thing, I've come to the conclusion that Mitutoyo America is rebranding Taiwanese and Chinese stuff as Mitutoyo, and selling it.

-- I cannot fathom why Mit is allowing this, but people have been complaining about their thread pitch gauges, parallels of all kinds, and feeler gauges.

I like Mits better any way. I have 6" Mit square that's made in Mexico that is nice. And a metric mic made Brazil. The ratchet knob is plastic ! But I bought it off Amazon .

I'm sure that someone will start making available Japanese Mitutopyo products, like what's happening with the red Makita battery powered tools.
