Missing wires on a 3hp motor

I p/u a what looks like a new 3hp ph1 230v motor, I went to wire it up to test but it seems P1 is missing.
I took the back off to make sure it didn't fall back into the motor, it hadn't, then just kept staring at it until I noticed someone had snipped the lead coming from the thermal breaker.

It seems to me if a solder a new lead to that terminal I will have a P1 but I thought I would run it past you guys first.
Also, why would anyone deliberately sabotage it?
Would a company do that before they sold it to a scraper?
I bought it from a flipper who had a whole trailer merchandise he was selling.

I would take a moment to trace all the connections, write it down, make sure it matches up for either CW or CCW.

If the wires are labelled it should be easy to determine if it is missing anything.

I would take a moment to set your DMM to resistance and do some checks between L1 and L2 and chassis ground before putting power to it

Edit - As well, before powering, use a DMM set to resistance to test the thermal switch as well.
 
I'm curious are you powering this with 240V?

The T5 connection to one side of 240V appears incorrect.
I will be powering it with 240v, the diagram shows T5 wired with T4 for CCW which is what I need.

Everything does match up except for the missing P1.

Based on the images is there only 4 wires coming from the motor?

If that is the case then I see your problem as you originally stated.
 
Yes, 4 wires coming out, T1 going to one terminal of the thermal breaker.

According to the motor wiring diagram T1 is either connected to T8 for CCW or T5 for CW.

The thermal overload cuts power to the motor by "opening the circuit". With that in mind T1 on one side and P1 on the other wouldn't make sense.

With P1 missing entirely it is possible that it was originally connected to the thermal switch. Do you have a manufacturer's name? Maybe it is possible to get a more detailed diagram just to make sure everything is correct.
 
T1 to T8
T4 to T5 to one leg of 240V
P1 to thermal cutout to other leg of 240V
Ground to ground
Test the thermal cutout It was probably clipped for a reason.

This is not that uncommon. Employees sabotage things to force management to buy something new that they want. At a Calgary auction a few years back I bought 9 school buses from the dead row for $150 each. We towed them to a friends place in Balzac and if 3 hours I had them all running. There were cut wires to fuel pumps and to engine shutdowns, and missing drain plugs to the transmissions on 2 of them.
Guess which school board bought some new busses?

I used to do a lot of scrap metal in the past, so we, as in me and my friend, cut the front half frames off and dropped the engine and transmission out, and sold those. The bodies were worth $900 each for scrap and they went to Blackfoot Metals.
