I take my empty filament spools to work. We use them and many others for processing different metal ribbons.

My son told me that Staples was selling empty 3D filament spools to store Xmas lights for $20.
I decided to see if that was true and searched their catalog. I didn’t find the spools but I happened upon Nicholson lathe files!!
They sure weren't thinking about me when they set those prices. :p

Never ordered from this store but they have the same model VS513 for $42.90/file (3 pack from Staples would be $61/file):

It's advertised as a Canadian store so I assume that the prices are CDN dollars.

What I don't get is why Staples is selling lathe files? Must be some nasty toe nails on some of the office admins ordering these.

For sharpening pencils??? Weird is right.

Boy, that's for sure. Next time, try Amazon for 27 bucks.
You forgot the shipping:

Cheaper from Grainger:

No shipping if you pick up. I got the 10” version about 2 years ago (now $11).

Longer tooth angle. Supposed to cause more of a shearing action. I had one at one point a long time ago, no idea where it went. My favourite lathe file was always a std 6" single cut bastard. I don't file surfaces in to fit or finish on a lathe very often, mostly just to edge break. Even if you do, you can skew the file for more shear angle anyway, but you can't do that next to a shoulder. Maybe I should buy another lathe file again just to buy some tools. That's what we do right? :D

It's been a long time since I've used one, but I think you're right, they do have a safe edge too Tom.

After looking at this Staples/file thread it made think about some of the old files sitting in the bottom storage cabinets under my lathe. I have a handful of files that are marked "Black Diamond Canada Lathe File". Look in overall good shape but will need some TLC. Reading about restoring old files right now.

A lot of people saying, "Wouldn't be a problem if you had backed them up in the first place."

Oh wait, wrong type of file...

No, I forgot to say Prime, delivered to my door for $14 a month. I have saved hundreds of dollars on carbon tax since I started using them.
Grainger is 100km away.
Thought that might be the case. Yes, Prime is worthwhile: get things pretty quickly when you need it, and extra cash back on my Prime Card if I can wait.

I'm fortunate that the local Grainger Branch is 8-1/2 miles (20 minutes) from me; MSC Branch is 17-1/2 mile (30 minutes) in the other direction, but have only gone there once (during the shutdown; unless things have changed, you have to call MSC so they can check local stock and take the order over the phone - shipping to the branch is charged, so unless they already have it there's no savings). For MSC I always check their website and eBay: usually can save a little using their eBay store and mostly free shipping (also compare with Grainger/Zoro, Amazon & Walmart).
