Job transition

Today I had to take care of myself. For a very long time I have felt used by the company in a contractor capacity. Since then I have applied for two jobs as a tool designer. I have an interview tomorrow at 2 pm, and the other just was sent a few minutes ago. Either way, I will make it, job or no job...

Also another opportunity landed on me Sunday with more scan and 3D printing work for a local artist.

Anyway... I would like to share an old ditty I play when this happens (only the second job I have ever quit)..

Well congratulations on your move and good luck, it sounds like it won't be too hard for you to find another job. Enjoy the song.

You spend a lot of time at work, you might as well be happy and enjoy it when you're there. I'm on the hunt too, but trying to get into a Millwright apprenticeship. Good luck on the job search.

I’ve had a string of jobs where I liked about 30% of what I was doing, didn’t mind 20% and hated the remaining 50%.

Now I’m in a job where I like 70% of what I‘m doing. I feel very blessed that I’ve been able to experience this in what will likely be my last full time job.

I always picture these situations ending in one of those "You'll never work in this town again!!" speeches.
It's nice when then are grownups in the room instead.
It was a good meeting. the main communication problem is between his wife and I. I find her very condensing and sarcastic. He and I are two peas in a pod, have worked together before 25 years ago and we can communicate by sign language... it is too good to through away. Also he is trying to roll me into his group of 7 companies, which I cannot go for until he were to really present it proper and I get legal advice and also advice from my financial adviser.. For now, I would really just like to keep it simple and keep full control of my business.

I've been in two companies that the wife was the dark horse (or plague) that was to be avoided.

My only advice is be careful the dark horse is always the killer, but if your gut deep down inside says its right, well go for it or regret it, even if it goes wrong.

I am glad you were able to work things out. I'm especially glad you can work from home.

As much as I can appreciate the general sentiment of that song, I took a different route, qualified for a decent pension, and swallowed a LOT of the words I would have dearly loved to have said out loud, about the general competence levels of my managers (not superiors, for damn sure!) over the years. Mainly because a.) I was keeping a firm eye on the Pension prospects, and b.) When you are in an outfit that has it's own Prison to send you to, you find quieter subtler ways to make your boss' life miserable! :D

Having had a great number of GOOD superiors, who were really, solid Leaders, definitely took a lot of the sting out of the bad ones, and in that outfit, you knew they, or you, would eventually go on separate paths, eventually.

Truth be told, I dunno how folks outside the Pension Plan life make a go of it. I had secure (if, crap!) wages, and couldn't get my ass fired for less than, pretty much, killing someone, or being so much a PITA that they finally fired me. But the end goal, aside from the experiences got, paid out pretty well.

I’ve had good bosses, poor bosses, amazing bosses, and everything in between. Last boss was initially upset when I told him “I work for me, not you” but he eventually came around to my way of thinking and we worked together for fifteen years.

If you can reach the point where your bosses understand that the reason you are there is for your benefit, not theirs, then you start to become partners and not master & servant. And if it’s properly structured, the more benefit you get the more benefit they get.

I’ve only had 4 jobs in my life and didn’t have any problems with 3 of them the other was due to a lot of people losing their jobs due to the company wanting a decertification vote when it was my turn to leave they told me that if I keep my mouth shut they wouldn’t hamper me gaining employment and being a single dad didn’t have much choice.
So one problem three graves to piss on.

I have worked in 35 different portals during my mining years, (that the government knows of) I had to get my records from them for Compensation to pay for my hearing aids. I never ever had to look for work, it found me, and I never wanted it to last forever. I mostly worked with great people and I got on well enough that one mine hired me back 10 times. I must have infected my kids because my oldest boy had to quit after 5 yrs and when I told him I never worked for more than 3 for anyone, he had this huge look of relief. He said he was going crazy doing the same stuff day after day.

The sad thing about that song is the last verse in which he hopes someday he has the courage to tell his boss...
You have the courage - good for you!

I had to get my pay this week. Seems they are making plans to use SketchUp to do the design with a cabinet software. This is all polygons and not working with real geometry. I understand his desire not to pay human wage, and be as cheap as possible, but I don't feel like degrading to that software...

I might just stick it out on my chosen path, which is to work for myself...

Last place i worked for 6 years, had the best boss when I started. He was awesome. He was late 60's , been a service manager forever, knew how to treat his mechanics. Everything was great. Dealership got sold, boss got sick with cancer, they brought in two lying, incompetent service managers who couldn't manage anything. The first was arrogant but an idiot. The second was just plain incompetent, and a hypocritical liar. She hated everyone, lied about everything. I packed er in and opened up shop at home.

When I was 18, I worked in a sawmill and I had a good boss, a great boss. Years later, when I became a supervisor myself I tried to remember the way he acted and treated the men, and I copied him. In a business if you hire good people, and treat them with respect, your equipment will last longer and your wage costs will be lower. Too many people have never figured that out.

After exactly 1 month off, I am getting the HELP calls. I asked if he wants me back earlier. So Friday it is... Going in much lighter this time though with my tools. Got a lot done during this break,.,,

Did the boss's wife bring you coffee? LOL!
