I never did any hand drafting. Our highschool was gutted of the trades courses aside from wood shop. When I got to college it was all cad. Although our first year "drafting" class was all 2d drafting in autocad. Same principles, just on screen. After that we moved into 3d modeling, and derived views from that and I've never looked back. I still like hand sketching things, but I don't go as far as a proper layout. I use CAD for that, it's WAY quicker. With my recent blacksmithing addiction, I find myself hand sketching stuff I want to make a lot more though.
Funny enough, my kids probably know more about using a drafting machine than I do. My FIL has one in his basement workshop, and the kids are always down there building stuff, and drawing things.
