Hey, I’ve got a couple of those funny looking rulers!

Used a double-log K&E (Mahogany with Teflon mating surfaces) for the first 3+ years of working on my BSChE degree (bought a one-owner HP-35 [he got an HP-45], and never looked back).

Still have mine. That said I never mastered it because of calculators came steamrolling through. It and the “how to” book are sitting on my bedside table……

D

I have a couple, including the circular one I got when I was around 13. Never moved up to a cylindrical though...

...which reminds me of how I've been thinking about getting a dial caliper, because reading those lines on the vernier (like on a slide rule) is getting harder, and the digital ones eat batteries.

Also have a Soroban, which I never mastered, but did get far enough into to realize that expertise in using it is kind of like playing a musical instrument - muscle memory, and not having to think about what you are doing because it has become automatic.

You mean like rolling your thumb over the slide to get fine adjustment?

I used a slide rule in university and my first calculator was a used HP45 that I repaired. I programmed an HP41 to play good chess. My favorite calculator is an HP15C. I have one on my desk. But I also have an emulator for the 15C that runs on my Android. It's a really cool app.

The younguns won't even know what that is. Ask a 12 year old to read the time on a dial watch or call someone on a rotary dial phone. In the late 80's a friends 12 year old asked if Paul McCartney was in a band before Wings!
I raise that to 25. I was Asked the time the other day and said it was 15:30. Just blank stares. Not only can they not read anything analog they have no idea what 24 hr time is. I actually instruct on how to read analog meters and it can be really tough. Simpson 260 meters Seem to be voodoo to some.

Back to the op I have two slide rules, I would have to dig them out, a Small one and a large one. I’m currently moving but if I see them I will post em.

I love my HP reverse Polish calculators and have several scattered around the shop and office so I can always find one.

If you have an android smart phone, you can install a clone of Hewlett Packard's HP-15c. That way it's always with you no matter where you go:

In landscape mode it has a full replication of an HP-15C including storage and programmability.

In portrait mode it has an abbreviated easy to use keyboard for regular RPN math.

Only without the clunky (I'm sorry, I had an RPN HP when I first started in industry – didn't need much of a calculator when driving ships – and even after using it for months I would forget to use the dam Enter key) RPN interface. I use the landscape version when working with functions or more than 9 significant places.

hat said I never mastered it because of calculators came steamrolling through.
I basically went from pencil & paper to the metric conversion calculator when Turd 1 created that turmoil...many hundreds of thousands of dollars were spent at that time because of poor calculations made in the dirt moving business & farming ,both of which I was involved in at the time.

I think I'm gunna start a special dedicated tool drawer for my Slide Rules & HP Calculators. Each one will also be in dedicated clear plastic containers with opaque lettering labels on them........

I have a few slide rules, although I am too young to use them properly. My favourite one is a Pickett that came out of Bristol Aerospace in Winnipeg.

In High School my calculator was an HP-38 E/C. (I don't remember beyond the 38)

Wish I would have hung onto it. It got tossed in one of the many University moves I made.

You can get black-on-clear label tape . . .
