Desktop mill

Wow! That looks great and affordable?! I of course know nothing about milling machines but it impresses me like machines that cost 10 fold more.

I dont get why these desktop machines are so often made from aluminum like this one is. The same design cut from steel would be far more ridgid.
 
To ilistrate my point look at the all aluminum shurline CNC mill. Then look at the all steel Taig CNC mill. I have run the shurline mill and it wasnt very ridgid.

Steel or cast iron would be nice but .... If you go to the Kickstarter page they say the mill/turn version weighs 560 lbs. I think that is over 10 times what a sherline weighs. A cast iron version would weigh 1200 lbs, which would require a pretty sturdy desk.

I'm going to guess that milling blocks of aluminum down to specs would be considerably cheaper than setting up a foundry for cast iron???? Especially if that cast iron isn't of Asian decent? (ie good quality North American made iron)
