Crazy Ontario Prices!

So, I know you guys in the West think that used metal lathes are cheap as dirt in Ontario...and just as plentiful. Whatever the reason, Kijiji sellers seem to be asking the moon-and-stars nowadays. To me, each of the following is asking MORE than the price of a new import in a similar class!

It is a strange world.

Atlas 618 - $1,600

Seriously? A new 7X12 can be had for $1,000?!?

Southbend 9A - $3,900

A King 10X22 is about $3,200?

Myford Super7 - $5,000

A Precision Mathews 10X30 is USD 2,900 or about $3,700 Canadian.

Now, I know that the asking price may be very different from the selling price. But each of the above asking prices is on the order of twice what I would consider a reasonable value the machine shown.

Yeah, you can't help asking prices. Same with ebay. Then the next guy, who would never bother to check sold comparables, thinks "this is what they going for". I should run 5 fake ads at high prices, put SOLD in the title for a week (why do people do that?) then once the pump is primed put that Starrett 0-1" mic out for $80 :D

Thing I don't get is why any of these lathes would sell for even half those amounts, when there is a fully working Hendey sitting there for $400 and the crickets are chirping.

Its not even my lathe, but its like the earth's axis is off and its causing aches and pains lol

Agreed anyone in the Ottawa area should snag that lathe. It is almost free! But I also wonder why he didn't list it on Kijiji to widen the audience. Or, why he would not call Cardon tools in Perth, who buy and resell used tools and machinery.

In case anyone is not clear on the lathe in question; in Kemptville (near Ottawa) there is a fully functional 9 x 24 Hendey lathe in good running condition for $400. It is a solidly built, high precision lathe weighing 3100 lbs. It was lightly used when the owner purchased it but had a fall at some point in its life. The owner repaired or replaced ALL the damaged parts. He has only placed the ad on the Practical Machinist website (as far as I know) where he describes the history of the lathe and reasons for selling it. The only very slight negative is that the seller will be removing the motor and VFD once the sale is complete. If it is not sold shortly, it will be going to the scrap yard as the owner is downsizing and cleaning out his workshop. I personally would buy it, but I do not have the vehicle or trailer or equipment to handle a lathe of that weight. If you are in the Ottawa area, and you or someone you know needs a high quality lathe, for less than 1/10th of its realistic value, then check out that lathe. A bit more info from this link; You can get a hold of the seller through PM. You would probably need to join the forum if not already a member.

A photo of a similar lathe and a brief description from lathes.uk

Solidly built (it weighed over 3100 lbs) and beautifully made the Hendey 9" x 24" (or, optionally x 36") high-speed precision Tool and Gage-Makers' lathe has long been a sort-after machine. The headstock gears and shafts were made of heat-treated, alloy steel and the 1.5" bore spindle, also of alloy steel, had a hardened nose marked with graduations to assist in cutting multi-start threads and was finished to precision limits. It run in super-precision bearings at both ends (the front pair being pre-loaded) and was provided with a push-in lock button (to assist with the mounting of chucks, etc) positioned on the front face of the headstock. The pulley that drove the spindle ran on its own bearings, concentric with those of the spindle and, because the spindle had nothing rotating on it between its own bearings, was thus isolated from any interference by belt loads, or vibration, from the base-mounted drive system. The spindle nose carried a standard Cam-Lock Type Dl-4" and the centre was bushed to a Morse No. 5 that could be removed and replaced by a set of 15 spring collets from the Hendey No. 6 Set (from 1/8" to 1" by 16ths). A special oversize collet of 11/8" capacity was also available. The stepless-speed range in direct drive (both forward and reverse) was 500 to 2000 RPM and in backgear (by very low pitchline velocity gears) 40 to 500 RPM. The spindle was started and stopped by means of a multiple-disc clutch, coupled to an automatic

I would add, as I said in the original post, that the seller is someone I trust and that he really knows what he is doing when it comes to machining, recondition, fixing etc. You'll get the straight goods on the machine from him.

Combustable, get your ass over there Haven't you learned its far easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission? God, and the wife is away, why aren't we looking at your pictures already! :D :D

I think you could negotiate to get the motor and VFD, he's just saying 400 is the scrap price without it.

If anyone isn't on PM and wants his email, PM me

Mike

I am only 20 miles from Kemptville, but 3100lbs oh boy, that's a lot of weight. My wife is away for spring break, I'd love to see the look on her face when she opened up the garage door and saw this in her parking spot:p.
Tilt n load tow truck could back right up to the garage door and winch it off....close the door....no lifting or sweating required

Unless you count sweating when the wife returns :D

No kidding, I'm on the other side of the country and I am considering packing for a trip, even with the cost of fuel. I can't believe that it's still available.....

I intially dismissed that lathe as an option for replacing mine but after reading more about the condition I’m pretty interested. Trick would be finding time to go get it and renting/borrowing a trailer. My truck will tow that weight no problem.

I could do some musical chairs with motors I have already have to get it running and still have a motor in my old lathe to sell it.

Go for it. And take pics! I wanna see her face too! But tell him that you want the motor and vfd too!

Edit - to be clear, I'm not suggesting a negotiation. Just pay for them!
