Auction-SURFACE GRINDER, Peterborough, ON

For those that like auctions, this one is very quiet and has very little wheel noise. Sounds like a good grinder. Certainly up for a hobby shop...

Fish on, I just finished organizing my shop too, this will cause a rift, but I think I can fit it in somewhere.

Thanks for the heads up DB. I might have found this, But probably not.

Temptations, temptations
I have room for one more machine, a small surface grinder or small shaper and I am not sure which would be more useful. for my hobby shop. I have had a few jobs which needed a internal spline repair (shaper), but the accuracy and surface on harden parts would be nice.
It's about a 3:30 hrs drive from my place. It looks small but weight about 1490 lbs and I would have to load it. maybe easy maybe not. It has a wheeled base, but not sure how easy access it would be to my trailer.
temptation, temptation.

That little swivel saw looks nice too. Always wanted one, and may throw a bid on it if it looks like I'm going to get the grinder. I don't "need" it, so if anybody else is interested I'll refrain.

@Dan Dubeau & @fixerup. You guys should talk by PM. No sense screwing each other in a bidding war. Might be better to bid against each other privately first, then switch to letting the other guy know when you are out.

That's always the negative to posting auctions on forums. Pretty much every forum I've ever been on, it was always an unwritten rule (and written in the case of PM) that you didn't post auctions, unless it was for your own stuff, because it could invite unwanted action against the forum members that did their due diligence and found the item first the hard way. I certainly get both sides of that argument. I might be pretty pissed if I sniffed out a rare unique item, and was currently sitting as a high bid with low traffic, and then somebody blew it up on a forum somewhere, and priced me out. On the other hand, I generally don't check auction sites anymore, unless I'm specifically looking for something so the link in this case helped ME out. I most likely would have found this at lunch on my daily kijiji search anyway.

I have a price I'm willing to go on this, and not a dollar higher. Considering the move, and the possibility we're getting snow later in the week, I've priced in how aggravated I'm going to be loading and unloading in the weather at both ends lol. If we weren't forecasted to get 4-6" of snow later this week I might go higher. But if I don't get it, I wont lose sleep over it. Considering the action on it already, I figure I'll be outbid later tonight sometime.

That's not the policy here Dan. We even have a dedicated forum section for member spotted deals.

If you spot something you really want, you always have the option not to post it.

The members here generally act by a first come first served policy.

Basically, we are a friendly, generous, courteous bunch who look after each other. That's why I suggested a PM to figure out one-on-one who should bid. I sorta like my own suggestion of a private bid followed by a drop out rule. But I'm not married to that. It might make sense to come up with something everyone supports.

Looks like @fixerup is out anyway. I hope you get it for a better price than your limit! Please keep us posted!

Ya, I get this forum is different. Just relaying my experience with others. Each have merit behind them and I can see both points.

I'll post up if I get it. Although I have to admit, I'm not expecting to, nor do I really want to right now. I've just got my shop to a point of cleanliness and workability, and I really just want to get into finishing some long standing projects, and not have to rearrange a bunch of stuff to squeeze another machine in. Even though I DO want a surface grinder in the near future. If I get it for what I bid, I'll be much happier dealing with the struggle though :D. I would much rather have a 6x18 too, but the majority of my work would probably spindex/Harig type pin work anyway, so a small table isn't a big deal really.

I have a 6x12 and I already wish it was a 12x24..... LOL!

I have not tried to do any pin work yet. That is next year's homework.

I always liked pin grinding work, but don't really get to do much of it these days, as it's rare I get to build out a fixture to completion anymore. Usually just on revision work. I know quite a few guys that I could scrounge some side work off if I had a grinder at home, so if I get it, I'll be making some phone calls. The work wont go away, so If I miss this one, I miss it. I also don't need a big one, I just don't want to limit my options, and I hate buying stuff twice. I know a 6x18 would be fine, I know a 6x12 would get tested occasionally..... It would probably fit better in my shop though.

There is not room for one more machine this time....I am out. Somebody will get a good deal on this, but It's gone above my lowball price of what I want to pay right now.

I may rethink this on the drive home tonight, and get auction fever though.....

My old man and I attended a local farm auction together. we got looking at stuff and got separated when a big ol' railroad company leg vise was offered up on the tool wagon. We were on opposite sides of the crowd happily bidding against each other for that vise to be mounted in the same spot in the same shop...real funny part was the auctioneer knew both of us very well and continued his chatter without letting on until it reached what he thought it was worth. I ended up paying for the thing and then the old man sold it with his stuff at his farm auction 10 yrs later.

Sold for $775 to some lucky guy that now has to go home, dig the trailer out of the snow in the backyard, and shuffle around a bunch of stuff in the shop to squeeze it in........

The Wife did tell me last night that the only thing she really wanted for valentines day was a surface grinder. That's what I heard anyway.

Congratulations...... We were starting to get a little bit worried that overstuffed wallet syndrome might be setting in.

Just out in the shop now, and I think I can squeeze it in with minimal disruption. Might have to ditch the mobile base though. Tough to find any documentation on it for size (or anything), but an educated guess, and a scaled picture says I got room without another massive reorganization. Phew....I was getting tired of that, and actually looking forward to getting into actual projects with my shop time....
grinder dims.webp

I just hope it's in good condition. It's always a gamble buying a machine sight unseen, especially a grinder, but the pile of grinding dust around and all over it, is both a good sign, and a worrying one. It shows that, yes it works and grinds, presumably well enough to keep someone in enough work for it, but it also shows a lack of care.....which worries me a bit..... I would have been happier getting it at my morning price but I had a change of mind at lunch, and felt like rolling the dice and gambling a bit, and reset my max at $800. Somebody else almost got it...I would really rather have a better quality grinder eventually, but this will fill a need for now, and be a good home shop grinder should I find a better one and send this down the road later.

I'm going to try and go up after work tomorrow afternoon and have a look, gather all the loose items, and figure out a game plan for moving it Friday. I'm not expecting a challenging move, assuming it's in a garage and I can back up to the door, wheel it over, pop the table off and winch it up some ramps onto my trailer it should be pretty straight forward. I'm hoping not to have to bring my hoist, as it's buried in the barn......If I can't go up tomorrow and get a lay of the land, I'll just bring everything on friday.
