I'm confused about the operation of the tension adjustment on the cross slide dial on my Atlas lathe.
I believe it is a model 3982 without the quick change gear box. The reason I point out the model number is I have seen some of these cross slide tension adjustment that have a set type screw. Mine does not.
If I turn the knob on the green arrow all the way back counterclockwise I can crank the cross slide in and out. The cross feed dial is loose and spins freely and does not indicate properly.
If I turn the knob on the green arrow up to the red arrow knob (The red arrow knurled knob and dial are one piece) and apply a light tension to the dial so that the dial rotates with the in feed, I have this issue.
I can crank the cross feed in with no problems. I can start to crank it out, but as I crank it out, it quickly tightens up and I can not crank it out. I think the knob with the green arrow is working like a jam nut and preventing any movement. I'm not really grasping what is going on here.
