Anyone with a metal bandsaw?

Hello, I just purchased a stainless steel rod of about 3 in Long 1 in in diameter. I am looking for someone in Calgary that could cut it in several pieces.
I would obviously pay for the time or the blade.
Thank you.

I can understand that question. You could have just asked me. I'm new to the site so obviously I'll learn to ask more precise question next time.

Each pieces have to be around 10mm or 0.40 inch long. I make Timascus and Damascus rings if that is your next question.

everybody relax... we have a great community here. Everybody is super helpful and contributes. Don't worry CalgaryVB someone will help.

Welcome CalgaryVB - glad to have you on the forum. Please post a couple (2) more times and then you will see an attach files button below the post entry area. Then you can post pictures! of what? Well we always want to see what people are making and we would love to see your work too.

So you want your bar cut up into 0.4" slices - as many as possible - about 6 or 7 I would think. There are some losses due to the blade kerf and it might not be possible to cut the last bit as it gets hard to hold in the vise jaws.

What part of town are you in? That might make it easier to find someone close by.

I see Vincent you posted earlier - yah sometimes posts have to be approved before they are visible. Spammers will take over and make the site useless if we don't control it.

What kind of steel is this? I'm not familiar with it. Is it a stainless grade of some sort?

I suspect your SS rod is of a specific quality or type of steel... if not I might be able to find a chunk of SS in your dimensions you need and cut it for you you (if you can't get a better offer...)
Problem is... I'm nowhere near Calgary but a few slices of 1" rod would be easy and cheap to mail.
I also need a chunk (maybe 4" or so) to clamp in saw vise that I won't be able to cut up...but I may have a longer piece of unspecified stainless steel rod that we could try?

I suspect someone closer to you will be glad to help out as that is not a difficult task.

Although SS is harder to cut, those dimensions you need should be able to be parted off (cut) on a decent sized metal lathe also.

Thank you so much for all your replies. It is Damascus steel it is made of stainless steel with 200 layers of 304 and 316. It's hard but easy to machine on my mini lathe. Just need to cut my rod in small pieces (6-7). Here is a screenshot of what I do with it. I'm in Tuscany NW of Calgary.

Can you part it off on your mini lathe? Nice ring by the way!

Hi Calgary VB. If its only 3" long & if I correctly understand what you are making - wouldn't it be preferential to have the stock about that length so you can grip say 2" in the chuck jaws in order to bore the ID, finish the OD etc. then part it off all in one operations? If you have a whole bunch of little segments, how will you hold them in order to do the ring turning? Sorry I'm not a ring maker just trying to visualize the machining steps. Look forward to some pics, it sounds like interesting material. Where did you get in from btw?

People might be a little gun shy as we're worried about wrecking pricey bandsaw blades. Does it work harden while cutting and wreck or wear out a regular hacksaw blade? I'd love to see more pictures BTW and especially some of the process details - I agree with PeterT above.

I appreciate all your help. I will you the lathe to part it. I will send you picture of the process as well later. Here is my last ring. Made from Momume Gane steel. Very expensive. The original piece was 0.5 inch wide by 1 inch in diameter. I made a ring size 10 with it.

Hey
CalgaryVB - do you have a definitive way to tell if the stainless is 316, 318, 304 etc? Sounds like you are set up with some mandrels and such so you can work with the smaller end cuts. Reason I ask is that we are always just pitching out the smaller off cuts and occasionally I can dumpster dive for pieces that otherwise go to scrap. If you can turn scrap into a beautiful ring, I think the pieces should be mailed out to you............I need a new wedding band......hmmmm....perhaps we can arrange a swap :)

It would be my pleasure and an honor to make you a wedding ring made of stainless steel. There is no way for me to differentiate between 304 or 316. 316 stainless steel contains an addition of molybdenum that gives it improved corrosion resistance but 304 is also very good considering that the ring will not always be outside. I made a ring from an Hex Nut for a friend.

Very interested in your Timascus. I have dabbled with Mokume Gane, is it similar?

Also, if you ever want several pieces of anything cut, give me a call.

Cheers,

Chad
