9" Utilathe Follow Rest

Would someone mind taking a couple of pictures of the FR for this machine. I've searched and seen some but none that are specific to the 9" lathe. I'm looking at buying a whatever FR for the parts and just building the proper base but I need to know what the base looks like and how it mounts. I have my theory but we all know about theories. Do I need one, probably not but need has nothing to do with it.

Brent H has or is in the process of generating a dimensioned drawing of the FR. Looks like there are now three of us on the same quest.

Hey YotaBota,

This is what you are seeking:

Follow rest:

Problem is: All the blessed Utilathes used the same type follow rest and steady rest with just the dimensions between centers and the height to the center being different - the scale of the item.

The 10 and 12" Utilathes are 6-1/2" on center for the bolt on part at the bottom, then there is the center height. The 12" LD model has basically a 2" riser on the 10" for the head and tailstock so I would think the follow rest and steady would be the same. For the 11 and 13" this is all different again and the centers are around 7-1/4"......

I have most of the drawing done up, however, I drew it 6-1/4" on center (wrong after measuring - UGH!) and need to change it a bit for the added 1/4".

I think the 9" is 4-3/4" ? (without checking back at the data YYC sent me). Can't recall the height from your cross feed deck where the bottom of the rest would sit to dead center of your spindle?

This is where I am at in the drawing:

Follow rest Screen Shot.jpg

just figuring out the smaller components - not having one makes it a challenge. I will go back and check YYC's info and see if I can finish it off over the next couple days sailing across the pond

I will also be doing up the steady rest. These are getting copied over from drawings and sketches of the gear from the 11"

if you can supply me with the following dimensions:

Follow rest dimensions.jpg

I will compare with YYC's and figure out how to scale the drawing for you and send it off in PDF with Dimensions

Here's what I came up with, at least one measurement is close to the same.

Bolt spacing - 4.625
Center Height - 3.680
Center to bolt - 3.255

Tried to edit the picture but just messed up my screen

Funny I was just thinking about a less clunky rest for my lathe. Do you guys not have T slots in your cross slide under what looks like a cover plate? My manual doesn't show them, but I have them. I'm thinking of bolting to that.

It took me a while to figure out that the two set screws on the rear of the saddle are just plugs to the crap out of the holes when the FR is not on the machine.

I'm looking at buying an off the shelf FR and just welding on a new base that way I can have decent adjusters and rests.

What would work well ---Thinking out loud for us Utilathe guys.....Would be to use the two holes and fabricate a bridge over the cross slide that you could then t-slot and use to move the follow rest to different locations, instead of just the center of the cross slide....hmmmmmm

YotaBota, the adjusters are pretty "easy" to make as a nice lathe project. Measurements are basically 1" round stock with a brass adjustable follower. You can get fancy and make the follower end a roller, a concave or a convex surface. I have those parts broken down on the drawing - nice lathe project...

From YotaBota:

Here's what I came up with, at least one measurement is close to the same.

Bolt spacing - 4.625
Center Height - 3.680
Center to bolt - 3.255

Bolt spacing of 4-5/8" seems pretty logical and nice inch fraction?

Center height looks to be somewhere between 3-3/4" and 3-5/8" - say 3-11/16" this is something you could adjust by moving the position of the Adjusters during the build

Center to bolt seems to be a consistent 3-1/4"

I can check this out at home but will continue the draw as home is still a bit away....

The mounting holes appear to be 5/16 X 18.

The swing over cross slide is stated to be 5.25". I measured the distance from the mounting flats to the top of slide to be 1.001". That makes the distance from the mounting point to center 3.625" or 3-5/8".

Images to be had here, but no FR unfortunately.

I am currently at work, but I emailed Brent H the dimensions for the follower rest bolt holes from my lathe a while back. Hopefully I measured correctly and they confirm your numbers. The thread size sounds right.

Ok, So the bolt Center to center seems to be 4-5/8" Height 3-5/8" and the center to bolts 3-1/4"

I will have something a bit later on. You guys all good with a PDF? I can e-mail you the AUTO CAD if you can open those things.....

I am good with PDF. I can also open auto Cad if you want to send that along as well. Thank you for all the work on this.

PDF is good. I'm starting to convince myself to just build one rather than wait for one to show up. Like Brent says, it's a good project, one more for the roundtoit folder.
Thanks a lot Brent.

Almost done the preliminary changes. What would be the measurement of the cross slide - the distance the legs would need to span?

Also there YotaBota - I have the scale drawings for the taper attachment if you want a rather involved project. I got those pretty much done with the help of YYC and then we found the donor lathe (bless its little heart) and I got most of the attachment :p.

Please include me on the taper attachment mailing list. Don't know if I will ever get to it, but good to have on hand. Thanks again Brent.
