Distributes the clamping force over a greater area, less likely to distort hollow work pieces. A three-jaw chuck will crunch thin-wall tubing, a six-jaw will clamp thin-wall tubing with lower force and less distortion.
The feeling’s mutual! I idly looked up the weight, thinking about shipping. KBC lists it at 70 lbs. :/
Probably for the best, means I can stop idly thinking about this.
I’ve promised myself not to spend money on tooling until my lathe is actually up and running. (Well, except the chuck and faceplate I’m picking up from Rauce this weekend. And except…, and, and)
